decorating help!!

In base housing, you can paint, but have to paint it back when you leave. It is boring cream right now, so I need to do something, but wondered about alternatives to painting???

Also, the living/dining is basically one big room. The couch/chair are tan with maroon/sage swirlies in them. The placemats on the table are maroon/goldenrod/orange. They coordinate together (same color family w/o being matchy-matchy) but I was wondering what color, if I do paint, to paint the room. I think maroon might be a bit much . Would sage be ok, even if it isn't in the table decor? Or should I do the goldenrod? I am going to hang a curtain on the sliding door that is in the middle of the main wall- I was thinking of a maroon or dark brown curtain (the trim is all brown & I can't change that). Also, the floors are a tannish linoleum (yuck, I know- I'll get a throw rug to match color wise).

Help me ?make this place a "home" for 3 years!!

Re: decorating help!!

  • Hmmm, I'm a very visual person so I'm having a hard time following the layout of your room. BUT, if I had to chose, I would think the goldenrod would give the room a warmer feel than the sage color. You need to post pictures! :)
  • Instead of painting, you could go with those vinyl words or decorations that alot of places are selling these days.  That way, you can peel them off the wall & not have to re-paint.

I think Etsy has them.  Just google it & I'm certain lots of links will come up.

  • You've got some very warm color tones you're working with and I think sage would look a bit odd with those colors coming in from left field. I would try a dark mustard color or even an muted orange color.
  • Personally I like the sage idea better then goldenrod.  I think it would be more calming/serene and complimentary.  Although all those colors of yellow to green are right next to eachother on the color wheel.  You could play around on Sherwin Williams website for ideas also, if you go with a sage, we've got Sherwin Williams in Clary Sage in our family room and love it.

I found this pic of a tan couch with sage walls so you could envision what it would look like, then you could bring in a bit more sage in some throw pills, a throw or even the throw rug you're going to get.

  • Thanks girls. I'll post pics soon (as soon as I get some of the boxes unpacked and moved). The weird thing about Japan is they have like 1/2 an aisle of paint at about 2 stores and that is it. Apparently they don't care all that much about the interior of their homes (they keep them clean and nice, but aren't big into decor). Us crazy Americans are the ones who buy the paint. But I guess their houses are so tiny anyway. I'll go see what I can find in those colors- it might end up being which ever I can get to match best since there are probably 2 greens and 2 yellows to choose from total! And they don't have the color match thingy here at all!
  • I was gonig to suggest vinyl letter/designs as well.
