Hi San Diego Nesties! I'm from Des Moines Iowa and I'm running in the San Diego Rock n Roll Marathon in June. I am traveling with Team in Training and we have the day before the race free to explore. I have never been to San Diego and I would like to make the most of our trip. Does anyone have any recommendations on fun things to do? Thanks
Re: Hello from Iowa
Congrats on the marathon!

After 2 rounds of IVF & 2 rounds of FET, we were blessed with identical twin girls!
If you can smuggle some Anderson Erickson Old Fashioned Cottage Cheese and some Dutch Letters on the flight, I will be your personal tour guide and chauffer!!
What part of town are you staying in??
Balboa park is a great place to spend a day. It has a bit of everything--the zoo, museums, restaurants, and tons of green space to lounge in.
You'll certainly see all of SD (well, most of it) on the marathon route! I ran it two years ago with TNT!! It was the most amazing experience, and please let me know if you have any questions! GO TNT!
Balboa Park, Gaslamp quarter (downtown area with lots of restaurants/shop/bars.), La Jolla (nice and fancy beach) , Pacific Beach (party beach)....

OK since you ran it I have to ask how was the course? I have heard it is up hill and hard!!! YIKES! I am not a runner I am trying to train but we have had a hard winter in fact it snowed on Saturday so I havent been motivated to go outside and run! I am starting to get nervous for the run I plan on going and having fun and I am not too concerned about my finish time although I would prefer to not be the last one finishing the race!
The Tulip festival is coming up next month which means lots of wonderful dutch letters!
honestly I am not sure what part of town we will be in I know the race goes by the zoo and pretty much all over town I dont want to do anything to crazy on Saturday because the race is Sunday and I should probably be rested and reay but I would love to check out the zoo!
It's actually not too hard of a course. Some gradual inclines (and I made a pact with myself to WALK up the bigger hills). But to be honest, there aren't any big hills that stick in my mind! I remember in training, we had some HILLS! that sucked, and there weren't any ones like that in the course. TNT trained me great...but towards mile 22 I was hurting! So I altered between walk/run and made a 6 hour time. Wasn't great time, but I finished smiling! Plenty of water stop, gel stations, bathrooms (EW!), and bands!!
If you go to the zoo, you'll be right in the same area as Balboa Park. The Prado is a great place to eat, which is in the park.
