We went this morning for Maggie's adoption.
I have been frustrated to have to do an adoption at all thinking it is ridiculous. Partially because she has felt like my child since we started inseminating and because I am already on her birth certificate. I think both W and I feel that we are both equally her parents. But we did the adoption to protect her and us, and to make sure I am recognized as her parent outside of NJ.
Well just like our NYC domestic partnership and our NJ civil union, we were way more touched by our adoption than we expected. The judge was incredibly warm and sweet. He acted like we were both adopting her (perhaps he was confused, perhaps he misspoke). We both loved it when he said that we are now as much her parents as any "natural parents" and when he said she is much better off with us as her parents. He was also really cute and excited about taking pictures afterwards.
So the hoop has been jumped through and legally I am Maggie's mom anywhere in the US.
Re: Our day in court...
Awww congrads! That's fantastic!!!
Congratulations! It sucks that families like ours have to go to these lengths, but it's good to have the ability to protect them. Great that Maggie has two completely legal moms that are recognized in every state!
Congrats! That is on our list to get ready for. Glad it all went smoothly for you.

Thanks everyone... It was a really relaxed experience except when I realized that I had left my driver's license at my chiropractor's office the day before (they needed to copy it) and thought I wouldn't be able to get into the court. Luckily they let me in.
Blue -- it is so wrong that second parent adoption does not exist in the whole country (or world for that matter). While I get frustrated by the hoops we have to jump through here in NJ, at least the hoops are available. I do believe that some day (not sure when though) that the hoops will have come and gone, and these challenges will no longer be present. I guess there is some optimism behind my indignation.

Congrats.
Maybe I don't have a heightened sense of smell, but I've never smelled any vagina on my pants. -- TSD
