Payroll software recs?

We paid a company to do our payroll last year and have since switched to our CPA doing them.  We are still paying for them but what I am getting from the CPA now is almost like why am I not doing them?  We have a nice printer at home and I am computer literate.

My goal would be to find a software with a one-time purchase that I can then do my payroll on, print the checks.  We are not real high tech.  Ice cream business gig so it's not like anyone's salaried or has vacation pay, etc.  I see some online subscriptions and stuff but also a few full blown software.  Any recs?  Anything to stay away from?  Is this feasible doing it myself or should I just not mess with it?

Thanks!

Re: Payroll software recs?

  • Quickbooks is the first software that comes to mind. I think you can download it from online.

Oh, and I love your updated bio! Your house is beautiful!

  • I second the PP.  Quickbooks has a nice payroll component that is very easy to work with.  My cousin bought a bridal store in January and I set up her company on Quickbooks with the payroll component and she really likes it.

I think you should be able to handle it on your own.  Maybe have your CPA review it for the first couple months to make sure it is OK, they you can fly solo.  Good luck!

Hope to make it down to your shop this summer.  I remember all the talk about it when you bought it.  Sounds so yummy!!!

  • Our company has used QuickBooks for several years, and only recently switched to ADP for our processing because we opened another office in another state.

QuickBooks was very user friendly, and easy for doing payroll taxes.  You buy the software, then we were subscribed to a payroll tax update, ($25 on a montly basis) to make sure everything with the tax side of payroll was up to date. We also bought the newest version every year.
