Quilters come here please
I found this really cool quilt online that I would love to make for my Mom as a Christmas gift (instructions are included). I have never quilted in my life and am curious if I'm biting off more than I can chew. Is there a support group out there that could help me limp along through the process?
Here is the quilt I would like to make:

Re: Quilters come here please
I'm not a quilter (nor do I sew, but I am taking a class in a few weeks to start learning to use a machine), but my MIL is. I've been to several quilt stores and shows with her and it is an art. I think if you have a basic understanding of sewing you could do it, but it might take a while.
I would suggest going to a local quilt store for a class. They may be able to help you. Also, it looks like that pattern may include applique. I think that's a more advanced technique, but again, I'm not an expert.
I think your mom would love something you made for her though and if you have time, what a wonderful gift for her!
I'm working on my first quilt and it's a time consuming process to say the least. ?But, it's pretty easy to piece together the blocks with a sewing machine. ?(There was NO way I was going to do it by hand.)
If you go to JoAnn's, they offer classes that could definitely help get you started. ?And I've gone in there just to ask questions, and the women have always been very friendly and willing to provide support.
There is also a quilting group that meets once a month in Lewisville, I think. My mom gave me the information, but I don't have the free time to go to the group meetings. ?
My only advice would be to pay someone to actually do the quilting and binding aspect of it, since it is your first quilt. ??

My MIL has a business quilting, assuming you are interested in having someone else do it up for you. Or bind it for you after you have pieced everything together. She has the quilting machine & everything. Her prices are reasonable, unlike many places & from what I've gathered on the internet from other stores.
If you'd like her info, email me & I'll send her info along.
Jen, email me (I lost all my emails when I switched computers). I'd be interested in finding out how much something like this runs.
Yes, I think it's a lot for a first quilt, especially if you don't know how to applique.
As a PP said, taking a class at a local quilt shop is one of the best ways to learn. GL!
There are several of us (quilters) on the nest craft board. Join us! I'm working on a quilt for a friend expecting a baby girl in August.
I wouldn't make a quilt like that, but I'm not into applique. I think that's what that is. I'd think it's difficult if you've never done it before.
I took a quilting class at Fabric Affaire in Richardson. I loved it.
