If you were taking a 20 month old on a cruise...

Re: If you were taking a 20 month old on a cruise...

  • I took one of those back pack carriers to carry ds in when we went on the islands. easier than a stroller to get on and off the ship and around the islands when they are strapped to your back. the type you would use while hiking.

make sure you pack plenty of snacks and juices to keep in your cabin.

I am so jealous of you right now! we have been anxiously waiting our cruise in october. we had it all picked out, eastern carribean as well, taking the kids... I knew they would love it! well I just found out that they wont allow you on if you are over 24 weeks pregnant. I seriously would have waited ttc if I would have known.

we are going to a resort now, but it wont be the same. I am a cruise addict!

are you stopping at st. thomas? what do you plan on doing there?

  • Congratulations! Big Smile

Yes, I will visiting St. Thomas in exactly a week.  I didn't book an excursion other than the Butterfly Habitat (it was getting expensive!).  I think Lucy will really like it.

DH will be scuba diving that day and I think Lucy and I may just do something on shore on our own.

I wish I had a back pack carrier for her.  It sounds easier than a stroller.  I am going to bring the Peanut Shell...hopefully she'll stay in.  And I bought a monkey backpack harness (which I HATE the entire concept of...but I'd rather put my kid on leash than risk loosing her...I had a nightmareTongue Tied)

Have you cruised with Carnival? If so I'd love to hear what you thought.

  • we bought a bear backpack harness for Aric when we went to disney last year. they can only ride so much in the stroller until they want to walk, and they wont hold hands forever. I dont love the harness idea, but there is a time and a place, and this would be that time!

I love carnival. I have done both carnival and royal carribean multiple times. we were going on carnival in october (let me guess, you are going on carnival valour... ) because they allow kids in the kids club at age 2 and they dont have to be potty trained. I know that wont work for you, but they do offer babysitting that lucy may enjoy? they usually have a seperate kids pool area that is so nice, and i think they have gtg for other kids her age. So watch for that in you cruise newsletter that they drop off every night.

well if your dh opts out of scuba diving (which I am sure he wont!) I would high;y recommend taking the ferry to st. john and going to trunk bay. its a gorgeous beach for lounging and swimming and great for snorkeling for dh.

If you are ever looking for something to do on an island, without doing an excursion, ask your room steward or wait staff. they go to these islands week after week. they know the best beaches and places to visit. that was how we found a great beach on st. marten that last time we were there.

  • If your child isn't potty-trained I would check the policy of the cruiseline to see if they are allowed in the pool even with a swim diaper. We just got back from a cruise with our 6 month old and we took a blow-up pool for him to play in since he wasn't allowed in the regular pool.

Not many toys are needed since there is so much to look at. You will have such a good time. It was hard to pack for me as well, we needed formula, bottles, dishsoap and bottle brushes, baby food, etc. but it was all worth it. Make sure you take hats and sunglasses for your child too.

  • I have no idea what to pack but I wanted to add that I am also jealous!

  • I looked into the pool rules.  She not allowed in the pool if she's not potty trained.  Sad

I understand keeping things sanitary and that swim diapers can leak but I'm sure there are more drunk adults and 8 year olds who don't want to get out of the water to use the restroom peeing in the pools than there are swim diapers leaking.

I'm not going to let my kid swim in a dirty diaper and I'm sure most other parents wouldn't either.  I think we'll probably just lie and say she's trained if anyone asks. Unless it's possible to potty train in 3 days. Huh?

  • I agree with you... like I said, there is usually a seperate pool area for children and if you swim in that pool, you are at risk of swimming in pee. plain and simple. I am sure there is no one monitoring this however, but I would just put a swim diaper on her and let her at it. you could say (if asked) that she is potty trained but you have the swim diaper on her "just in case".
  • I was on Royal Carribbean and thought nobody would say anything, well one day we were letting DS put his feet in on the stairs and a worker came over to make sure he wasn't all the way in! I think there is more nasty things in the water from the potty-trained 6 year olds than the chance of a swim diaper leaking.

Just take a small blow-up pool along and fill it with an ice bucket when you are sitting around the pool. They don't need that much water.

While I love cruising, we decided that until our kids our potty-trained we're doing resorts instead. That stupid pool took up too much room in our shoe box sized room with a pack n play in it!

  • Did you bring your carseat with you?

I'm thinking it's a must (being the law in all).  I'd need to get from the hotel to O'Hare and from Miami Airport to the ship.  My SIL said she is not bringing one for her 13 month old.  I'd rather not risk it.

  • I like to take a little travel bottle of woolite on vacations...in case any laundry needs to be done in the sink.  I think I've only ever used it once!  But maybe with kids that will get used more!

Have fun!  And take lots of pictures!

  • Hi T1!  Dave is worse than children about laundry...he always wants everything washed after he gets slightly sweaty.

Where do you get travel size detergent?

  • We took a travel carseat that weighs only 4 pounds. It's Edie Bauer and we bought it online for $45.00. It's a 5 point harness and did the trick for what we needed. DH is a cop and he said it was cool for temporary use. I tried to get a shuttle from the airport to the port with carseats and had no luck. I would be willing to borrow it to you if you are interested. It folds flat and fit in our carry on.

I also agree with the laundry detergent. They have travel size of ALL concentrate at Target.

  • Thanks, I was about to take you up on your offer untiI called the shuttle service that goes from the airport to the ship and they don't even have buckles so a carseat is pointless and that makes me really nervous.

  • I just put some Woolite in a little plastic bottle.   They usually have those little bottles near all the travel size stuff at Target.  I also do that with Daisy shampoo!  That stays in her bag for when we go camping or my parents watch her.  She likes to find places that require the use of that way to often!  :)
