Take the job or no?

Already talked to DH - but want to get some more opinions from you ladies, (because y'all are smart).  Overall, I think I just need some more opinions:

Job I have Now:
Temp work right around the corner from where we live - its ok work in bankruptcy, not really what I want to do for the rest of my life.

Good: Close to where we live, ok pay with potential for a lot of overtime, young, very dot com, casual dress, easy work, great atomsphere, with room for growth.

Bad: Not what I want to really do for a living, still havent hired me as a full time employee, dragging their feet. No one here is married/has kids.

Job Offer:
Paralegal position.

Good:  Could evolve into an atty position (if/when I pass the bar), it's what I want to do when I grow-up, helping people who got cancer from asbestos. Ok pay, no overtime 9-5. It's an actual full-time position, no more temp crap. Nice people.

Bad: It's in Tarzana, we live in El Segundo. We had already talked about moving up there, possibly to Camarillo. Pay is not what I should be making as a law grad, but still ok pay and better than what most of my friends are making.

So talk to me....

Re: Take the job or no?

  • How hard will moving be on hubby?
  • He is already interviewing in the same area - has a second interview next week. (He's an attorney).

  • Cool - I would probably take the more stable job! Good luck!
  • My vote is for job #2!!!!!

A job is a big commitment / it's what occupies the majority of your time. If you have the opportunity to do what you like, I believe you should jump on it. No amount of pay can replace following your dreams, and it sounds like there would be a lot of room for advancement.

I can speak from personal experience. I was working for Forbes' #1 company in America. It was a great job, but I didn't feel fulfilled. I left the company. I now make way less, but I really enjoy what I do everyday. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

  • that's a tough one... for me, long commutes are dealbreakers. I want to spend as much time at home as possible. Even if I was making better money, I'd be waking up miserable every day knowing the freaking LA traffic I was about to face. Pretty soon you end up hating your job. Just something to consider... some opportunities usually sound better until you're stuck doing it every day. I'd rather make less and not hate my job... but that's just me. If I were you, I'd try to make a decision ASAP on whether or not you're going to move, cause it sounds like you're just in limbo right now. If your husband gets the job there, sounds like a no brainer to me, move and go for it. If not, keep looking for a better job locally.
  • Thanks May - I am leaning toward #2. They want me to start Monday!!!

  • Awesome, and congratulations!!!
  • I vote for #2.  Even with the bad commute, long term it seems to be what you want.  Times are tough for attorneys now, I'm crossing my fingers for both of you.

Good luck girl!  Don't forget to post a message for us when you pass the bar!
