where to stay/what to do?

We're coming in from Chicago July 2-5 to see Royals  v. WS games at Kauffman stadium.

I'm having trouble figuring out where to stay.  Any suggestions or info about safe areas?

We'd like to not have to drive, but we will if we need to.

Also, what touristy things are there to do in KC (sightseeing specifically)?

Re: where to stay/what to do?

  • Union Station and Liberty Memorial are pretty cool. If you want to do sightseeing stuff I have a company that does city tours. A lot of KC's history is downtown. I've only looked into them for big group tours but I think they can cater to any size group.

The P&L District is the new entertainment area downtown. It's across the street from the Sprint Center.

There are beautiful gardens all over the city if you're interested in that.

Kauffman stadium is actually in Independence so you will probably have to drive.

As far as hotels I don't know much about Independence but pretty much anywhere you stay downtown or on the Plaza (a fun place to go shopping, eat out, etc) will be safe. If you want to be able to walk mostly I would probably suggest the Plaza - but hotel prices there can be a little more than other parts of the city.

  • I would suggest staying at the Plaza or Downtown.  As pp said, both are reasonably safe.  And they are only a 15 minute drive or so to the stadiums.  Easy drives.

Also, I was just looking, and it appears that the Hyatt Regency Crown Center located right near the Plaza might have a shuttle only costing $5 each way that runs to the stadium.  This would be a nice option if you are looking to stay in a higher quality hotel.

As for individual sites, as you are obviously baseball fans, the Negro Leagues Museum would be a good option.

And definitely eat some barbeque while you're in town.  Jack Stack is my personal favorite, and there is one located on the Plaza.
