Moms - baby bathing suit question

I know, this is a REALLY dumb questions, so please be patient with me.  We bought Elizabeth an adorable little bathing suit at Target, and can you believe we don't know how to "use it?"  The bottom is made of really thick terry-cloth-like material and is called a "swim diaper."  I'm assuming we still use a "swim diaper" (like a "little swimmers" or something) underneath, correct?  DH thinks we can just use a regular disposable diaper underneath.  I'm not sure how well that would work.  Thanks!  Embarrassed

Re: Moms - baby bathing suit question

  • I saw those and had the same question.  I would put the swim diaper underneath it because I wouldn't want DS to "go" in anyone's pool.  I don't think you can use a regular diaper in a pool.  But maybe I'm wrong.
  • I have no idea but am interested to know!
  • i would use the swim diaper, just to be safe.

have you seen a baby at the beach wearing a regular diaper? not a pretty site...

  • Hmmm I haven't seen any boy bathing suits like this, but my gut reaction was if it says it has a swim diaper, I would think that it would absorb the wetness like a diaper...  But that doesn't make sense b/c wouldn't it get soaked right away in the pool???  I'm stumped too.

and fwiw, i was going to buy swimming diapers too.

  • Oh I'm really curious to find out the answer to this.  I looked at those exact suits at Target the other day & passed on them because I wasn't sure how they worked!
  • You always, always put the swim diaper on (Lil' Swimmers or whatever brand you buys) - regular diapers when they go in the water all congeal and the gel inside balls up - I learned this the hard way.  So if the bathing suit you have for the baby is a 2-piece, and the bottom is a diaper cover, you still put it over the swim diaper.  It's my experience that one-pieces work better, but some of the two-piece suits are way cute.  Bring regular diapers with you for the MOMENT you get out of the water (you do not want to deal with a poop in those diapers-tmi!). When I know we'll be swimming, I usually bring 3 swim diapers and 3 regular diapers.  She constantly wants to keep going in the water.
  • I actually think it's the opposite, the swim diapers do a much better job with poop than pee.  They collect the poop, but if they pee they absorb nothing....I learned this the hard way...I put Molly's swimmie on before we went to swim lessons.  Of course she did #1 and #2 on the way to the Y, about 2 miles from our house.

I also really like 2 pieces, prefer the tankinis.  Makes diaper changing soooo much easier.

I totally agree with jcls on this issue - the pee just runs out of them.  It's awful.  But the poop os no picnic either.  Bottom line - take them off as soon as you get out of the water - and if you can, wait till the last minute to put them on before going in the water.
