Toddlers in Cabs?

Hi there Chicago nesties! Question for you...if you have a toddler, do you use cabs to get around? We're coming in from Austin in a few weeks, and I was hoping to avoid bringing a carseat with us...but now it looks like because of the time we get in, and leave - we're going to have to cab it to and from the airport (I had planned to take the el). Is it even legal for cabs to take you and a 2 year old without a carseat? Just wondered how any of you handled getting around in cabs with your toddler. Thanks so much for your help or any suggestions :)

Re: Toddlers in Cabs?

  • You do not need a car seat in a cab. Personally, I try to avoid them with my kids as much as possible. When I have to take a taxi, I put my child in the center seat with the lap belt on.

Most taxis won't have LATCH (too old) and you won't have time, etc to properly insall the seat, making it useless (if you had a baby bucket it would be a different story).

BTW, the L runs 24 hours. Or you could call a car service and see if they have car seats.

  • I have always had my son in cabs, the El and busses without any issues. You are not required by law to have a carseat in the cab--just belt the child in. One thought though, you will need a carseat on the plane...
