Anyone scared of the slow cooker?

So all the talk about the slow cooker last week got me in the mood to take it out of hiding and use it this week. I am making the vaca frita recipe today.

Only problem is.....this is the first time I leave the slow cooker "home alone." My husband used to work from home so I would use the slow cooker on the days he was home. Today is the first day I left it on all alone and Im kind of scared. I hope my house is ok!

I know im silly. My job in the news makes me paranoid about things like that lol.

Re: Anyone scared of the slow cooker?

  • I've always wondered about this too. I'm always scared I'm going to come home to a pile of ashes
  • don't worry...i know sooo many ppl that use it like that.  my moms been using the slow cooker ever since i could remember.  we would all leave the house and come back to cooked dinner.  it was awesome.  and if you're in a newer built home, most electrical outlets have those automatic switch off button (don't know the name)...they install them in the kitchen and bathrooms.  so don't worry!!
  • That's the reason I never used it before! I was scared of the house burning down.  But knowing that the "cooking fairy" is home preparing dinner, makes forget about the risk.  LOL  I figured that so many people for YEARS have used them.  And you don't hear too often of slow cooker fires; and if they were that dangerous, wouldn't they be taken off the market?

     Thats true.

Dont mean to scare anyone but my best friends brothers house burned down last month. Short circuit blew in the kitchen. They did NOT have a slow cooker on or any appliance for that matter. So I guess it will happen regardless if its meant to be.

  • I never worry. Always worked out great
  • I wouldn't worry :) I am sure it's like you said... working in the News kinda makes you paranoid sometimes, especially when it hits close to home like what you mentioned.
  • if there was an electrical problem...it was there regardless any appliances (remember you always have you microwave, fridge, stove connected). so don't worry about it.  you're more likely to burn down the house from forgetting to turn off a candle than anything else....and even then, depending where you leave the candles your house might not burn down.
  • I too was scared until my DH then boyfriend proved to me how safe it is. On the weekends we usually start it up at night and then it'll be done in the morning and we'll have the chili for lunch. Pressure cookers...now that scares me.

Omg I am terrified of pressure cookers! My cousins blew last week. No one was injured but the kitchen was a mess. Im thinking of returning mine. It's still in its box.

Lol...I know I sound ridiculous ladies- Im scared of kitchen appliances lmao!

  • Pressure cookers scare me to. I am to afraid of the lid blowing off and the kitchen being a disaster.  We got one as a gift and I am not sure if I am going to use it or not.  We shall see.

  • Oh yes, the pressure cooker scares me.  But I soooo love how the beans come out.  soooooo freakin' yummy.
  • Pressure cookers and slow cookers both scare me.  I finally caved and bought the slow cooker though... even though I've only cooked in it once while I was here the entire time.

  • Now the pressure cooker is a whole other story. My mom never used one, but my grandmother sure did.  Whenever she'd cook in it while I was at her house, I wasn't allowed anywhere near the kitchen!  I was always scooted out.

I don't own one, nor do I have plans of doing so.

  • I agree with what everyone has said about it being safe. The only extra thing I would add in is to make sure you inspect it every once in a while and make sure that all the wiring, etc., is intact and that there aren't any frays or cracks in the insulation of the wiring.

My mom didn't let me get a pressure cooker because she says that she doesn't trust me to use one without blowing it up lol.

  • I have wondered about this too, but I haven't had any problems and I dont anyone that has either so, I'm ok with it. DH gets nervous when I leave it on b/c we live in a Mobile home but thats what insurance is for. lol
  • I'm not scared!  And only because DH said that 4 years on the job, he's never once seen a slow cooker fire (he's a Firefighter) and he said that if there is an electrical problem where it would cause a fire, it would happen whether the slow cooker was plugged in- your fridge/microwave/oven are plugged in at all times!  (and the fridge is constantly running)
