ladies who sew

Do you think it's less expensive to sew your own curtains or to buy them from the store? I'm just talking about pretty basic panels from Pier 1, etc. I will eventually need 84" curtains for a single window in one spare room, a double window in the other, a double window in our dining area, and a double window and single window in our living room.

 WDYT?

  • 84" panels are super expensive when you buy them.  I am sure you could make them and save a lot of money.

Plus, you can make sure you get exactly what you want when you make them.

  • also, make sure you get what you REALLY want, get quality fabric unless it's just temporary.  I have nice ones in our bedroom but inexpensive ones in the kitchen and living area since I know we won't be in this house forever.

  • Usually it is cheaper to sew them yourself.  A lot of the panels come in the whole 54" of the fabric.  A lot of times you dont need that much bulk to your curtains so you can split that fabric.  I made some panels for my mom, got the designer fabric on sale for $3.99 a yd.  I put 18" of ribbed chenille on the top of the panel and covered the fabric/chenille seam with pom pom trim.  They were only like $12 to make total.  If she had bought those they would have been over $50 a panel.

Those weren't lined but if you want bulk you will nee to put in a drapery liner but that is only like $3 a yard.  Also a layer of flannel between the liner and curtain fabric makes them hang really well.  I am making 96" burlap panels for my breezeway.  4  96"x42" unlined panels will only cost me $24!  That is a real bargain.

Thanks for the info! Where do you find this fabric on sale?

  • I found it on fabric.com  It was actually a designer quilting cotton on slae for 1/2 price.  But they do have good sales and regular prices.

  • So do they need to be the full 54" wide, or can they be split in half?
