Tornadoes?!??

OK... Help a girl out that's not from the south.... When is tornado season over??  It's starting to stress me out... Sirens in the middle of the night is sooo not fun!

Re: Tornadoes?!??

  • oh man..i went through this when we first moved here from Tucson..it took me a few years to get used to it.

As for tornado season, it can happen anytime but to me April is always the worse

  • WELL.............. having grown up in FL and been through many a storms.... keep in mind the sirens usually go off if there's a tornado warning or watch.  The storms are worse in April but can happen anytime during hurricane season (May-Nov).  I guess I'm just used to it and as much as it should probably alert me, I hate to say it but I guess I'm immune to it.

In a smaller town like ours you can hear the sirens EVERYWHERE.  Whereas in the town I grew up in you could RARELY hear them.

  • Spring is usually the worst part.  But the school that my dad teaches at was blown away a couple of years ago in Dec.  The town right beside my hometown was blown away in the 70's by a tornado.  I think it is ranked the 4th deadliest tornado in the US.  So needless to say people from that part of AL are very cautious.  Just hunker down it should be over soon.

Then you can worry about hurricanes and the tornados that we get from the hurricanes!

  • Yeah, its pretty much year round here.  Spring is usually the worst, but we've had some pretty bad ones in the winter months too.

This :) It's normal to be a little freaked out if you're not used to it, but it's just a fact of life around here.

You sort of learn to follow the signs... If it's unnaturally warm completely out of the blue during one of the cold months (with very little time for the temps to slowly rise like it normally will if temps are unseasonably warm or cool without the prospect of tornadoes) or vice versa and there are a chance of thunderstorms, there will usually be a tornado watch sometime that day. Also, you can look at the clouds and tell the difference between a thunder storm brewing and a possible tornado.

Also, there seems to be a weird stillness in the air and if you really listen, a lot of the birds and stuff aren't singing and flying around like they normally do.

I do need to tell you this... It's best to be prepared. If you hear sirens, it would probably be a good idea to get somewhere safe and have a battery-operated flashlight and radio handy so you can listen to the weather. If one touches down in your area, you may not have time to get somewhere safe before you know about it.

I could stand to be corrected, but those are the signs I keep an eye out for and  can usually call it.
