I am with you, I have to be inside all day.  I am making my contribution to earth day, by planting a veggie garden.  I am only starting with a few items, we will see how it goes.  So Happy Earth Day.

LOL, you are too funny. I'm sure it tasted better then the mud pies I used to make as a kid. You couldn't get me out of the backyard or out of a tree. My mom knew I was going to be an environmentalist from a very early age.  Heck, I started neighborhood composting pile in my parent's backyard when I was 10. We had the best soil that all the neighbors shared. Big Smile

  • happy earth day!!! i feel like i should have worn a green shirt today :( i would usually do a clean up the park today w/my school.  but haven't done anything like that in a while.  claire, if you schedule something like that (wink wink) let me know.

btw, my friend is an environmentalist as well and she teaches highschool kids.  so if you ever need them for a project le tme know, i'll put both of you in touch.

Very cool. Thanks for letting me know. I've been wanting to help out with a beach clean up, but have been so distracted with teaching and researching that I have not keep up with the local environmental non-profits.

  • My town has beach clean-up days. I will look into it. DH and I recycle and try to conserve water. I'm more eco-conscious than he is so we have a tough time seeing eye to eye. We did, however, replace 20 some light bulbs with CFLs.

  • Every little bit helps. I'm definitely more environmental then DH, but he is starting to recycle. Baby steps all the way.

    Claire,

what/who are some of the non profits that you work/help out?

  • Back home in LA, I was very active in environmental non-profits. I was president of the university environmental organization and organized their Earth Day fund-raising concert for eight years.  Then I was the PR person for TreesAcadiana and an active member of the Louisiana Environmental Action Network (worked on environmental justice issues).

When I moved to Tally, I volunteered each week at The Nature Conservancy on the North Florida Greenway Project.  I volunteered for various clean up days and awareness programs organzied through FSU.

But after all that, I have not done anything since I've moved here.  I guess I've been slammed with teaching and researching to get involved.

Are any of you guys involved with non-profits?

  • I'm not right now but I want to get involved. If anyone knows of any non-profits are the good to work with let me know. Thanks.
  • Great question, Katie. I think I'll start a new thread for us with this question.
