Vent!

I know I've mentioned this before but ugh, I hate the fact that married heterosexual people my age don't have to report there parents income for the FASFA, and actually get the aid they need. Then there is I, who hasn't had help from my parents in years, support myself, but since my dad falls into the 'wealthy' bracket, I don't get jack, and I NEED b/c my parents don't support me.

I HATE that, I can't even get the same finanical aids rights, as the straight married kids. Seriously, p!sses me off!

-Rant Over.

Re: Vent!

  • :-(  At what age are you considered independant?

  • 24. 4 years from now. :-( Seriously ridiculous!

  • Umm...I don't know about that.   A kid I work with - 21- is estranged from hs parents and put off school for a year so that he would have 1 year of taxes filed as "single".  He's getting student loans now.

If no one is claiming you as a dependant or has for the last year, I think you're good to go.

  • Yea, he probably filed an 'appeal' and the accepted it. Or he fought tooth and nail, and got his parents info. They don't care if you know them or not. Even if you've been with someone who's your legal guardian for years, you are still required to get your parents info regardless. I've been fighting this for a loooong time with no success.

  • You should talk to your schools fin aid people. There's a way that they can legally change your status to independent prior to 24. There are hoops, but there's a way. I used to work at a homeless shelter for young adults and it was something that their caseworkers would help them with, but financial aid officers at schools can do it too.
