Dear Community,

Our tech team has launched updates to The Nest today. As a result of these updates, members of the Nest Community will need to change their password in order to continue participating in the community. In addition, The Nest community member's avatars will be replaced with generic default avatars. If you wish to revert to your original avatar, you will need to re-upload it via The Nest.

Thank you.

Note: This only affects The Nest's community members and will not affect members on The Bump or The Knot.

What nonprofit do you volunteer with?

The Happy Earth Day thread got a good conversation going about volunteering with nonprofit organizations.  Redwingsfan posed a good question: what nonprofit organization do you guys volunteer with?  We are looking for ways to get involved with our communities.  Thanks!

Re: What nonprofit do you volunteer with?

  • What a great topic! I've also seen it discussed on other boards after the For Better board announcement. I've volunteered with my local SPCA & Humane Society, and plan to hopefully be able to do some work with animal shelters down south when we make our move.

I work for a non profit.  We just recently went down to Camillas house and provided  free dental work on any homeless person that wanted it.  I also did not get paid to help so it was actual volunteer work and I felt good afterwards.

  • I volunteer at His House.  Its a BIG foster home.  I always like giving back to the community, especially with kids w/needs.  I use to volunteer w/Camila's House.  But don't any longer.  I was also a Gaurdian Ad Litem...if anyone is interested in volunteering w/these organizations please let me know.
  • Cooperative feeding program, a soup kitchen that serves Broward county, it's open for breakfast and lunch...it's so rewarding especially when families show up. Once a year we also volunteer at the post office for the annual association of letter carriers food drive and separate and box donated food items...this year I won't be able to do it, but if anyone is interested it's Saturday May 9th at 11 different post office branches.

  • The Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is my nonprofit organization of choice.  It is my sororitie's philantropy, and during the past few years, I've done a few different volunteer sessions to help raise money and awareness.  I wish I actually volunteered more!

Last year, I helped out at the survivor's tent at the Race for the Cure, and OMG what an exprience.  The day was def filled with hope and tears.

  • Now that I think about it, in HS I was a member of the Key Club that was all about volunteering and helping the community.  At the time it was a drag to have to go to so many different events... but looking back, it made us better people (IMO - and that is not saying that not volunteering makes you a bad person).  I actually miss doing those things.

  • I would love to find a non-profit marine life organization in this area. There is a great one for logger head turtles in Juno beach but that's a long drive from Boca.
  • I used to do a lot with the league against cancer. I do the March for Babies yearly although i am not going this year :*(

  • Cynthia, I didn't know you were a guardian ad litem. That's awesome! :) How do you like it?

Unfortunately I haven't done much volunteer work since I finished college. Law school has been pretty time consuming. I would be lying if I said I didn't have time to volunteer, but it's just that in the grand scheme of things I value the little free time I have so much that it's hard to get motivated to do stuff like that. Hopefully in the next few years I will have more opportunities to volunteer my time again like I used to back in the day.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Working on my dissertation is very similar in that I have little to no free time (plus my teaching schedule).  I'm looking forward to having this dissertation done so I can get back to volunteering more often. I really miss it and it always made me feel better knowing I was making the environment a little bit better. :D

I loved it.  Did it for 2 years.  I seriously think that is a great program to volunteer with.  Unfortunately, I was loaded with too many cases that were interfering w/work.  I couldn't keep it going.  I didn't feel like I was able to allocate the right time to it.  I plan on going back. One thing is for sure, you have to be very very strong....I don't recommend starting now that you're pregnant.  It will break your heart b/c you're sooo emotional.  I remember I would cry to DH about some cases.  But you become stronger.

At His House, you work more of a one on one basis with the kids.  And its a lot more about having fun.  I also had to stop b/c most of the time the kids needed active work...i.e. changing diapers, feedings, being put to bed.  It was just too much to do during the 1st tri, you're exhausted most of the time.  You can also become active w/the older kids.  That's also very very fun.

Jen- if you'd like any info on either organization let me know.  I don't know if you've heard but they cut the funding to GAL by 1/2...so they are in more and more need of volunteers.  If you know anyone that's interested in it let me know and I'll put them in touch w/the departments.
