Anyone else's DC obsessed with the outdoors?

Ava wants to live outside.  Every evening after I pick her up she just wants to stay outside and play.  When I bring ehr home, she screams because she doesn't want to take off her jacket, and she keeps her nose pressed to the glass door, crying to go outside.  We have about 2 hours, to eat dinner, bathe, read books, brush teeth and go to sleep.  She's been crying the last 2 evenings because all she wants to do is go outside on the slide.  She would stay out there till midnight if we let her!  I'm happy she's outside most of the day at daycare (and she's got the bumps and scrapes to prove it!), but the outdoor play mid-week is tough at home!  How do you - daycare moms especially - fit it in? Are your DC obsessed with being outside?

Re: Anyone else's DC obsessed with the outdoors?

  • JT is the same way. He throws a fit when we get home & I try to take his coat off. The last couple of nights we have been grilling so it makes it easier. He gets to play outside until dinner is ready & then it is in to eat etc... Though because it is nice we have been going for walks after eating with the boys so he is happy that he is at least outside.

On a normal day though (non beautiful weather), I take his coat off & he screams - I leave him where he is until he calms down enough to get up & be with the rest of the family (usually lasts 10-15 minutes).

  • My DS loves to be outside as well.  I have found that the last few nights, grilling has helped (as mentioned by mrs.condo); which has allowed me to keep an eye on him, but also get dinner ready.

I try my best to get him out for walks, but it has been a bit of a challenge the last few nights as I am getting more and more tired, and I'm going solo most nights b/c of my husband's lacrosse season.

I wish I had better ideas for you.

  • Yep. We usually take her out for a little while after dinner. She has to come in as soon as she breaks the property line rules though, so it never lasts long.

She often has a tantrum when we come in, and when she's done, she has some milk and we hang out inside.

  • Nate does the same thing.  He absolutly fights me to go inside.  We generally take turns and either DH will go outside while I get dinner ready or I will go outside.
  • Yes.  The mantra from DS is "Outside? Outside? Outside? Peeeees?" He doesn't understand "No" and if he IS outside and you make him come in, you are the devil.  He is a wilderness man, for sure.  :)

We have also been letting him out while we grill and generally he's hungry for dinner and he knows the after dinner routine, so that's the end of it for us.  Most of the time!

  • Madilyn is also obsessed with the outside. I'm glad but as you said it is so tough on a school night.
