Overnight getaway somewhere close?

Our 1 yr anni is coming up in May.  We just bought a house, so we can't go anywhere too expensive.  I'm looking for a nice little city or hotel or bed & breakfast within 2 hours of Orlando.  I'd like to go somewhere we can just chill out and have never been before.  You'd think this would be easy, but I really need suggestions!

Here's where we've been already: Crystal River, Rainbow River, Daytona, St. Aug, Clearwater.  No Disney, no downtown.  Doesn't have to be a beach area.

Thanks!

Re: Overnight getaway somewhere close?

  • My H and I are going through the same thing, we are thinking of Ft. Meyers, Sanibel or Marco Island, I think those are more like 3-4 hours away but still close enough for a quick weekend trip.
  • We went to Anna Maria Island for our 1 year and stayed in a cute little beach cottage. It was so nice..!.. The beach is not crowded in that area..

I second the recommendation for Sanibel Island! I believe the drive is closer to 4 hours, but it's definitely doable for a weekend trip. The beaches there are beautiful. :)

    Hawaii
  • Sanibel/Captiva Islands

    Tampa

  • Mount Dora? It's pretty chill and definitely has B&B's around town.
    Oh Crumbs

I was actually looking at quite of few of the B&B's in Mt Dora.  I've heard it's a cute little town.

  • St Aug is fantastic!
  • Mount Dora is a great quiet little town with lots of B&Bs.

I'm from Ft. Myers...so Sanibel sounds like a yucky, terrible choice to me. The sand is sticky, the beach is expensive, and the gulf is also very sticky there. But for whatever reason, a lot of people like it.

  • Amelia Island is lovely! It's just north of Jax and you can get there in three hours. It has a couple of high-end resorts on the south end of the island, or you can stay at a B&B on the NW end in Fernandina Beach. We stayed at the Addison, which continues to get great reviews on Trip Advisor. I recommend staying away from the hotels on the SE end, though.

  • I do not recommend Crystal River AT ALL. St. Augustine is nice and has really cute B&Bs. Look into Siesta Key as well - GORGEOUS - and it's by Tampa so only a few hour drive.
  • Vero is pretty close - around 2 hrs or so

    Same with St Augustine

  • My husband and I are in the same boat, and we are thinking about spending 2 nights at the Ritz Carlton in Naples... apparently there are two and the one that is the "golf" is constantly running specials for $99 a night. Plus they have a free shuttle to the "gulf" Ritz where they tend to your every need on the beach.

    Good luck! :)
