Poll: Keeping track of $$$

It's a gorgeous and sunny Friday and I am bored at work and so ready for the weekend.  Let's have a poll!

So over the last week, Cecilia and I changed how we keep track of our finances from my notebook approach (everything was hand-written and according to my very specialized organization that made no sense to my lovely wife Wink ) to a fabulous Excel spreadsheet (Cecilia is like an Excel master!).

I love our new system!  We set it up for the whole year, so now I only have to punch in the numbers and everything is calculated for me and recorded and saved for all time in a way that's easy for both of us to understand and allows us to track everything very easily!  It's awesome!

So I'm wondering how all of you keep track of your finances together?  Are you computerized? Manual? Playing it by ear?

Re: Poll: Keeping track of $$$

  • A combo of each:

My friend's account husband made a kick ass Excel so I use that.

    Plus check book

    Plus Mint.com

    Plus bank account

It might seem like a lot but each one has helped my budget/finance plan in a different way.  So for now it works.

  • i do all of our finances and use Quicken - its like quickbook but circa 1999ish ;)  i go on there once a week to pay bills, balance accounts, ect, but I also check our checking account online every day.
  • Look at that! 10 votes so far, and no love for the notebook!! Ha ha!  I guess I stood alone on that one Smile

We do check our accounts online all the time, but the spreadsheet is what keeps track of everything in one place.

  • T does some crazy notebook thing with check marks and dashes and slashes. makes no sense to me, but it works for her and all of our bills are paid on time Smile so i guess i shouldn't change it lol

  • our money is separate. we keep talking about combining things but haven't yet. she keeps track of hers with her paper checkbook register, and i track mine primarily through mint.com and quicken.
  • I guess I'm one of the few that still uses the handwritten notebook thing wow I guess I need to get in to gear and start using excel. J has been asking for months to make me a spreadsheet of some sort since it drives her crazy that I'm always making notes every month, my defense is I've been using the notebook system forever and it works so why change it??
