Before you bought your house did you check the CT sex offender website???

I was talking to a friend the other day about this and before we bought our house we did not check this website...it wasn't even a thought that I had.  Now that I am a mother I think that when we move I will definitely look at this site.

If you were to move, would you check out the website and if there was an offender on the street would you still buy the house??

Re: Before you bought your house did you check the CT sex offender website???

  • I checked the other day but only because I got a fwd from a friend about it.  Otherwise I would not have thought of it.

If there was an offender on the same street it would really make me think twice about the house.

  • Yes, I checked it before we bought, and would check it again if we moved.

Yes, I checked.  In my apartment I lived in prior to moving I knew that th neighbor across the street was a sex offender.  Since he was within 50 feet of a school and hadn't confirmed his address, I helped out a bit. :P  Then I moved.

  • We did not when we bought our current home. We're not in the best neighborhood, and I dont want to know. I know DH has checked since we've been here, but I told him not to tell me.

The next time we move, I'll definitely check. I'll hopefully have children while in our next home and I that will be important to me. I think I would forgo a house if there were someone registered in the area.

It's sad that we have to think about these things.

  • I didn't even think to check. Does that make me a bad mom? Sad

  • I checked it...but didnt pay much attention. a lot of the "sex offenses" are stupid little things (ok not stupid...but you know what i mean....hopeully). anything outlandish i most likely would have noted
  • No I did not check and when I move I don't know that I would make a concerted effort to check it either.  Although, on Halloween last year I did check and I found that there is one offender living in a condo complex near me and two others in town.

  • We didn't check the list when we bought our house and didn't think anything of it.  For our next house I still don't think I would check the list only because no matter where you go there is bound to be someone either on the list or not on the list around the neighborhood.  It took us forever and a day to find this house, I don't foresee the next one being any easier.  The less hassles the better for me.  If I found out there was someone on the sex offenders list then I would make sure to take extra precautions to protect my children.
  • I checked and only for one reason: DH and I had been looking at a home in Marlborough. I was bored one night and looked up the street. There were 4 (!) sex offenders living in the neighborhood. Needless to say, we did not buy the house. After that, I checked for any neighborhood we were looking at.
  • I did, luckily there weren't any on our street. I probably would have still bought it though since it's a starter home and we will probably upgrade in 5/6 years.

  • When I saw this post it made me VERY nervous that I hadn't checked the area around the house we're about to buy and scared to do so (because I know I'd walk away under certain circumstances). But, this is important to me, so I bit the bullet. Luckily, where our new house is, there is only one offender in the neighborhood (not our street), and the conviction is classified as "other" (not rape, not a crime against children, or assult/battery) back in Texas in 2002. I know what he looks like and where he lives, and I can live with that. Phew...
  • I checked the site before we bought our house.  I don't think we would have bought the house if there was an offender nearby.  It's just not worth the risk.

  • A couple of months ago when we started looking at houses we were looking at one in Southbury.  We took a look at it then drove down the road and were stopped at a stop sign.  While we were sitting there DH and I were looking at the house in front of us and thinking "this house looks really familiar"  "Why?"  It took a few seconds but we figured out that that was the house that was on the news because the serial rapist who was released from prison but put on house arrest lived there (remember that was a huge story not too long ago).  I honestly went back and forth on my feelings of the whole thing.  Luckily we found a different much better house and didn't have to try and decide.

  • Hey can you guys tell me the site where I can search by street name. The site I have - I can only search by town, and then look through the creeps--NO THANKS:)
  • We checked our town, street, all surrounding towns and their neighborhoods and ruled out places before we even looked.

My DH is a cop, though. So it's kind of close to home for him.

  • We didn't.

For a future home, I would probably check if I remembered and it would completely depend on the type of offense actually (i.e. someone convicted at 19 for having sex with his 16/17 y.o. girlfriend would be different than a pedophile IMHO.)

  • I did and there's one a few streets over.  I will say though, that I know from personal experience that there are people who are convicted of sexually based crimes who are not registered sex offenders.

So, I take the list for what it is.  Is someone registered on my street?  No.  Does that mean that no one on my street has been convicted of a sexual crime?  No.

  • Actually I'm not a fan of the registry b/c it clumps everyone into one big pot.  If you are convicted of statutory rape you're on the list.  I wish they partitioned out the real problem people.  I think it's hard to just look at where the offenders are located, but you also need to know why they are on the list!
  • Yes I checked it.  Luckily there were none in my area, but if there were, I'd try to find out the nature of the crime.  Something like statutory rape wouldn't concern me.  I might reconsider on a house depending on what I found.
