Thanks again to everyone for the thoughts and prayers, they're obviously working.
Last night I was told that they're removing the probe from Kevin's head that was there checking for any pressure/swelling on his brain, which I take to be a very good sign since that was the biggest concern. They've also decided to start reducing the amount of sedative they've been giving him and slowly waking him up, a day ahead of schedule.
He's basically got a broken rib, some fractured bones in his face and a major head injury, although luckily no brain injury (that they can detect) and it looks like no hemorrhaging, thank God. He's tied down to the bed and sedated so he can't move because they want his body to be able to recover as best as possible. Apparently they didn't even clean him up because they didn't want to disrupt him in any way, so he looks absolutely horrible, but it sounds like his body is starting to heal and that's all that matters.
Word is he'll be in ICU for another couple days, then in the hospital for three weeks so we've still got a long road ahead of us, but for now it looks like he's very lucky and won't sustain any lasting injuries from this, it's just going to be a long, slow, painful recovery.
Re: Nephew update
It pains my heart to know this little guy is in the hospital. My brother was hit by a car when he was in high school and I remember his recovery being slow. But he's fine now and soon your nephew will be fine as well.
What exactly happened? Do they know who hit him?
Sending prayers and hugs your way.
Thanks Danica, I'm glad to hear your brother is OK. I'm sure the fact that my nephew is just six years old is probably working in his favor. They're pretty rugged at that age.
I still don't have full details other than he was coming back home from across the street (where he wasn't supposed to be) and just ran out in front of a car. They live on a very busy street. The speed limit is 50 so this could have been much worse.
An older couple was in the car that hit him and I'm sure there was nothing they could do and I'm sure they feel horrible. They stopped and the whole street was closed down until everything was cleared up. That's pretty much all I know right now since everyone is just trying to focus on getting him better. I'm sure questions will start coming as he starts getting better. I know his Mom is going to feel horrible and I hope she doesn't beat herself up over this. She and my brother are great parents, but you can't watch them every second and they tend to do stupid things.
Oh my gosh, this gives me goosebumps. I can't even imagine. I'm glad to hear he's going to be okay, though - you're right, it could have been much worse with a speed limit of 50mph! I will keep your nephew and family in my thoughts for a speedy recovery.
You are so right Sue, you can't watch your kids 24/7. I hope that your nephew has a speedy recovery. I'm sure the couple that hit him feel horrible. I can't imagine how awful that would feel.
I'll tell you what, it's amazing what the doctors can do for people who are hit by cars. My brother had a brain injury and had a blood clot forming. He now has a metal plate in his head where he was opened up. It was the scariest thing. But now he is fine and has no lasting damage from it. I am so thankful everyday for the person who stopped to help him. He was on his skateboard and was hit and the person who hit him took off (that's my brother's story and he doesn't remember much).
Thinking of you and your family!
