Moms: Starting cereal ?

I am beginning to think that DS just isn't satisfied anymore with just a bottle.  I know that the pedi recommended starting cereal at 4 months, but did mention that if we thought we wanted to start it earlier, to give them a call.  I keep telling myself that 4 months is only a few weeks away and we could wait, but it just seems like he should be able to go longer between feedings (sometimes it is 2 hours, sometimes 3).  I've tried upping how many ounces he gets, but that doesn't seem to matter.

So I was wondering if anyone else decided to start cereal a little earlier?  I definitely don't want to rush things, but I want him to feel satisfied and go longer between NIGHT feedings (am I asking for to much??)

Re: Moms: Starting cereal ?

  • We started cereal at 3 months.  DS was doing well at night (sleeping 6-8 hours) then started to sleep less and want to eat more often.  We started with rice cereal (that is what was recommended) but he could not tolerate it so we switched to oatmeal (just at night, first).  Now, we have the go ahead to give him cereal in the morning and at night along with some stage 1 food.  He seems much happy and only takes about 4 bottles a day instead of 6-7.
  • I tried at 4 months with both boys and neither was ready. I will wait till Ryan is 6 months like I did with Evan.
  • Medically, I wouldn't recommend starting cereal till at least 4 [if not 6] months.  The gut isn't "sealed" till some time in that range, which means a higher risk of reactions and allergies.

Also, cereal isn't as nutritionally dense as formula, so while you might fill the tummy, you're not giving as much nutrient-wise w/ cereal.

The results are *very* mixed as far as solids and STTN.  It's much more dependent on the child than what you're feeding him.

  • Melany--

How did you know that Evan wasn't ready?

  • We tried at 5 months, but Julia wasn't ready.  She's just started to enjoy cereal at 6 months (rice & oatmeal), as well as beginning fruits (banana, apples) and one veg (sweet potatoes).  DD has 5-6 bottles a day, about 3 hours apart.
  • Our doctor had us start Cassidy on cereal at 2 1/2 months old because formula alone was not satisfying her and she was drinking over 45 oz a day. She loved the cereal and did wonderfully on it.
