ttc travel ramble

This could be lengthy and pointless, but I know you ladies are the only ones who will understand!

Cecilia and I are planning on starting ttc in August (eek! 4 months to go!!).  We were also planning on taking a mini trip to Key West (just a few days) in October in honor of our anniversary, and what could be our last baby-free vacation.  We were at peace with the fact that we might miss a try if my ovulation fell on the trip, because we were really looking forward to doing a special trip together, and it would only be one try.

Well then my mother calls this weekend and says she wants to have Thanksgiving in Disney world this year! My grandparents live outside Orlando, and she wants us to go down there with them to spend a few days and even wants to foot some of the bill - sounds great...

And then we started thinking about Xmas - we alternate year to year, and this year we are going to be in Pennsylvania....

SO... If we did all these trips... Worst case scenario would mean missing 3 months of insems!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AngryCryingSuper Angry We both panicked, jumped into bed and buried our heads in pillows for a few minutes to regroup.

We are not ready to talk to our families about our ttc plans, because, frankly, we don't want to put up with their nagging (I'm sure many of you relate!), so we had to figure something out.

Turns out, my mom isn't 100% on Turkey Day in Disney - my stepdad is a cop and he just got his job back after being laid off for a month, and due to more budget cuts, could be laid off again this summer.  If he is laid off again, no Disney.  Xmas is set in stone - C's family would be devastated if we didn't go.  But at least we are driving for that, so we have some wiggle room with when we go/return (plus, if we absolutely had to tell C's parents about us trying, it wouldn't be too bad).

So our solution is to hold off on booking Key West - still take the time off work, but not plan anything and basically wait and see what happens with the Disney plans and our first insem in August (we don't even know yet what my cycle will be like because I've been on the pill for 5 years - going off of it at the end of May), and go from there.

Even if we can't make it to Key West, we could do a little weekend trip to Vermont or something, or C had the terrific idea of putting aside the Key West money for a trip either after we're pregnant or after we have the baby.

PHEW!  We were pretty freaked out about potentially missing 3 months of insems!  I kept whining to C, half joking, "All I wanted was to go to Key West!!" Crying  But with family all over the eastern half of the country, it can be hard to stay put!!  So hopefully it will all work out for the best and we'll get pregnant in September Wink (wishful thinking can't hurt!).

I guess this was just our first taste of the many stresses of ttc!

  • I totally understand.  Every time we had to insem it was around a holiday or family event.  It was stressful but it all worked out.  I am all for the babymoon after you get pregnant or have the baby.  Our trip was great and I am glad we did it.  It always worked out for us so don't stress too much before it is an issue.

  • i understand 100% - and i'm sure you remember my similar post a couple weeks back :)   its so hard to plan when a huge part of your life is an unknown, but things have a way of working themselves out.  not to mention, this practice in flexibility will suit us well as moms!

  • Thanks Sam and Elise - I knew you'd understand!  It's hard when so much is up to chance and you really can't plan, plus our families don't even know what's going on.  We just have to have faith that it will all work out for the best Smile

  • I understand. It is so hard. After the first couple of insems (maybe even the first if you've been tracking your cycle) you will know approximately when you'd inseminate. Of course, there will be some days of wiggle room, but you'll know if it would be earlier in the month versus later in the month (Thanksgiving.)

The flip side of that is that if you do manage to inseminate before going on vacation, it makes the 2ww go by so much mrore quickly.  Our 2ww the cycle I got pregnant was during a vacation to my parents house at the beach. L is convinced that the relaxation, drinks on the beach (yes, I drank (lightly) till I got a + preg test) and low stress helped me get pregnant.

     Good luck!!

  • ITA - it's too hard to plan.  There is a small chance I'll be in SF in August during my ovulation which would me no IUI.  But how can I plan that far? What if we are extremely lucky and get our BFP on one of the first few trys? Or what if by August I'm looking foward to a break?

Plus, like you said, you don't know what your cycle will really be like until you're off bcp.  I agree with not booking anything non-refundable at this point and then just wait and see how everything starts to play out.

  • Thanks for the commiseration everyone! Before we know it, we'll all be complaining about the challenges of planning with babies Smile
