Can I vent about daycare in Central Florida??

I'm still on the hunt for a daycare for my little one. The one place I found and loved has a waiting list (of course). So I'm crossing my fingers that one of the people on the list hits the lotto soon and won't need daycare so I can take their place.

It's just crazy that most of the "nicer" daycares are upwards of $850/month for an infant. That's what my friends up north pay for daycare and they are in big cities!! This is little ol' Orlando.

Ugh... thx for letting me vent. If I don't find one that I like (and can afford) soon I'm going to have to put my infant to work at my job filing papers and faxing memos.

If anyone knows of any good daycares in the East Orlando area, let me know.

  • I feel your pain regarding daycare. Last year I considered working part time, but the daycare in my neighborhood was charging $75/day for part time care. Yikes!

Also beware of wait lists, they aren't always what they seem. I returned to work for a few months after my son was born, and I was on wait list for my preferred daycare since I hit my second trimester. They implied that they would have no problem fitting us into the infant room. Once I gave birth I called the daycare to let them know I would be enrolling my son in 8 weeks and their response was "well, we don't have any open spots for that time frame..." In short, wait lists don't always guarantee you an opening.

  • Sent you a PM :) I share your pain about the cost of daycare!
  • awww, I'm so sorry.  I wish I could help you.  I am actually looking into starting up my own daycare.  DH and I are looking to have a few more children and pretty close together.  With OCPS not hiring me back next year (stupid budget cuts) and the cost of childcare for multiple children, it's the best option for me to be able to stay home and still have income coming in.  Hopefully, I will be able to buy a building soon and hire staff, but I know that will take time.  I think we are moving, but if I'm in the area, I will let you know.  Smile

  • I feel your pain! When ds was an infant, we found a wonderful in-home daycare until he was 1. It cost $360 a month, compared to $550, and I loved the woman who watched him. Daycare is expensive, especially for the area we live in. If I didn't carry the health insurance, I might consider staying home.
  • Now I'm scared! I haven't even looked because we still don't know if we'll need it or not.

I live in Avalon Park. I'm gonna be SOL I guess if I don't eitehr decide or start looking.

Anyone have any suggestions in Avalon Park area?

  • Look around and look early.  Waiting is not a good idea unless you're totally sure you won't need daycare.  The good ones have waitlists because they may only have one or two infant rooms at 10 babies per room.

The daycares in my area only have one baby room which is for 6 weeks to walking.  Once they start walking they move on to the next room; so no space until one of the creepers becomes a walker.  If you're due during the first part of the year (Jan, Feb, Mar, Apr) you can pretty much forget it unless you enroll during your first trimester.  Last year the class had 5 Feb births alone, with 3 of 5 other birthdays being Jan, Mar and Apr!  (That's half the class if you're counting.)

And a waitlist is a PIA.  With my stepdaughter they had to go on the waiting list even though they enrolled as soon as her mom hit 12 weeks.  They didn't worry about it until right before she was due they found somehow they "fell off" the list.  So they had to get back on the list (now at the bottom because they had no proof of their prior enrollment).  It took until my stepdaughter was almost 6 months old for her turn to come on the waitlist.  Moral?  Keep all of your enrollment/waitlist papers (make the director sign something and/or place a deposit) and check back with the daycare at least once a month to make sure you're still on the list.

  • I do agree that its crazy how expensive daycare (and now I am experiencing the same thing trying to find a preschool) is in this area.  But I find that Orlando costs a lot more then people realize to live in.
