What do you think of the trend towards "No-Fail" grading?
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,518101,00.html
I think that not allowing a student to fail is only setting them up for failure. "Oh, it's ok you didn't turn in your homework on time...you get another chance!" You don't get "another chance" in the real world so why should you get one in school. If there's a reason - a family member dies, your sick, etc. sure, have one more chance to get it turned in. But not because you simply didn't do it...
Re: WDYT
I'm comparing this policy to one of a law school I know of. They give only a "Proficient" or "Not Proficient" for grades the first year. It's such a waste. Because, first, students cannot transfer with a "Proficient" as a grade because you need a GPA. Plus, if you're "not proficient" you can still continue with your law school career. Basically, they insure that they have each student for 2 or 3 semesters, even if they shouldn't be in law school.
I think an H for Held is silly too. How long are you going to "hold" someone? Will they ever fail? Because if you can't keep up, maybe you need to fail. I just see this as yet another way to baby people. I had to get good grades, I HAD to get all A's (more for me, but my parents pressured me too). If someone can get through without doing work, that's not fair to the people who try and push themselves.
I think this is a bunch of bs. I have a friend that teaches special ed at a high school level in a very poor area and there is some reason why she can't fail or hold back kids. I can't remember exactly but I want to say her school won't get the funding they need if kids aren't advancing because of the "No child left behind" policy.
I have a huge problem with the way our education system is these days. This is a prime example of "We can't hurt anyone's feelings by saying you failed." Yes, because CEO of Big Corporate America Company is really going to be nice if you FAIL at your job.
I think there is SO MUCH pressure on kids and schools to excel,.. but we haven't set our system up so people CAN excel. Our kids leave school with less knowledge than any other nation...and yet we're making it EASIER for them to come out with less knowledge? Great, I can't wait to see our future leaders in a few decades!
