How do I...

Develop a relationship with my half sister?

I feel like we should have something more close than what we already have.  She just sent me an email congratulating me and DH on being pg, and it was just so sterile.  I know we won't be super close, we never have been.  But its so weird.  Our birthday's are a day a part (three years and one day), we got engaged in the same month of the same year, we got married the same year and now we're having babies within a month of each other.

I'm not saying I want us to be secret swaping sisters, we're too old for that, but I'd like to be close friends who at least talk once a month, not just sending sterile benign emails twice a year.

Re: How do I...

  • This is JMO, but I think to go beyond sterile, there will have to some sort of real experience shared between you. Not to get all deep or anything.

Could you discuss your pgs, even if only over email? Be real about what you're feeling and ask her how she is feeling or if she feels the same? I think that when you both meet your children, there will be a lot of bonding opportunties then. You might try asking her advice on something even if you don't really need it, just to bridge the gap. (And another frame of reference is always helpful).

  • I think having a relationship is a 2 way street. ?If you want to be closer to her then reach out a little and see what happens. ?Invite her to lunch. ?Go shopping for maternity clothes together or baby clothes. ?Double date with your DH's. ?See how it goes. ?My sister and I are super close now but it took a bit of work at first b/c we were 4.5 years apart. ?We just started making the effort to spend more time together and we clicked. ?It wasn't something we verbally discussed it just kind of happened as a result of spending time together if that makes sense. ?

?On the other hand if your attempts at reaching out to her aren't successful and she isn't responsive then you have to reconsider what this is worth to you. ?I have had a couple friendships that have been one sided with me doing all the work and it gets old fast.

I wish you all the best. ?It sounds like there is a great potential for a nice relationship. ??

  • Another issue we have is that she lives in Orlando. I saw her twice in 07 only because we both got married.  When she's visiting relatives up here we never see each other, and when I'm in Florida we always say we'll get together but we don't.

I don't know exactly what I want, but her email was just so bland it made me sad.  I think I'll try emailing her back and sharing some of my first trimester experience, maybe that will help.

  • I didn't realize she lived in FL. ?I know what you mean about wanting something more but just not knowing what. ?I think your email idea is a good place to start.?
