Jewelry boxes

I don't feel like I have all that much jewelry, but as I search different websites for jewelry boxes, it doesn't seem like everything I have will fit in any of them and still be separated. I currently have a small box with probably 12 compartments or so, and then a bunch of jewelry in various gift boxes and a tiny crystal jewelry holder.

I'd like to get one big box for everything and be able to separate it out. I've had to throw away a lot of my earrings because they've tarnished; I'm not sure if that's because of the box they're in or because they're mixed with other pairs of earrings, etc.

Any recommendations? TIA!

Re: Jewelry boxes

  • YIKES...if this "tarnished" jewelry was silver or gold it could have been cleaned easily. You can purchase cleaning solutions at various places, even Walmart. You can also make your own. If it's costume jewelry it still might have been saved with a polishing cloth.

About boxes: I have an armoire that I bought years ago and I filled that up so I've gone to those little plastic boxes that you can compartmentalize...  you can get them at Walmart in the hardware areas. I find that for organizing they are the greatest. With an individual little "section" for everything it's so easy to find what you want. I have one for silver, one for gold, and two misc. boxes for odds and ends both coded either silver or gold. I also have one of those boxes with drawers for larger pieces. I took my label maker and now I know what's in each drawer. humm, I'm sounding too much like Martha. I'll stop now.
  • I use one similar to this, but taller (and more drawer space):

I like it because you can keep your nice jewelry and your costume jewelry separated. little jewelry boxes never worked well for me either =

  • Oh, yeah -- they were all cheap pieces of jewelry that tarnished, so it wasn't a big deal. I just wasn't sure if there was something I could be doing to prevent it from happening. I'm pretty sure they were all silver or silver plated, so I'll pick up some cleaning solution for the future.

I was thinking about getting organizers like that, but I thought maybe I was being too much like my cheap self, haha.

  • That's pretty much the kind of design I'm looking for, but any box I've found that seemed like it would be big enough was expensive. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right places.

My mom got mine for me during christmas at walmart. I think it was somewhere in the $20 range? I bet you could find something relatively inexpensive.

Otherwise, I like the idea of using a tackle box or organizer like Jane mentioned. The added benefit of putting them in something like that is that if someone breaks into your house, they're looking for a jewelry chest... not a tool box!

  • I also use a bunch of those clear plastic ones!  But it IS because I am being thrifty..lol!!

I have one jewelry box that is similar to AM's pic.  I bought it from Target years ago!  It holds most all of my "nice" jewelry.  I have those clear plastic ones for everything else!  During the year it is hard to find any.....but they really bring out a ton of jewelry boxes at Christmas time!  You can find them just about everywhere then.  They must be a hot gift item ;)

  • DH got me one that is similar in design to the one AM showed but it is bigger. He got it at Dillards. I absolutely love, love, love it! I have seen them at Target and at Belk too. I agree with PP about the Christmas sales but if you can't wait that long Belk normally has a pretty large sale at the beginning of summer.

  • Thanks for the tips!

  • How about a jewelry armoir?  Jim got me one and I love it.  It's really beautiful and holds a TON.  This is not mine, but similar:

  • *Armoire*  I can't spell...
  • I might go with an armoire once we have matching furniture in our bedroom. I don't want to pick something out now that wouldn't look right. I can't wait until we can start using our money to fix up the house...
