Since im sure some of yall have changed yalls names after the weddings which is easier to get first your drivers license or social security card??
Im kinda excited that i get the new looking texas drivers license!
any advice?
Re: Changing name...
I dont know if there IS a right order, or an EASIER order, but I did my SS first, then straight over to the DMV to do the DL. It's a $10 fee for DL, I believe...
Oh! DEFINITELY Do your Social Security card first!! I did my DL first and everything got all messed up. I had to go back to the DPS and show them my new social and marriage license.
You can mail in your SS form and they get your new card back to you pretty quick. Then go do your DL!
I didn't change my name, but according to my local Knot board (before I moved to DFW), they say:
Name Change
? This certificate will serve as evidence of your marriage, which you'll need when you begin the process of notifying several government agencies about your name change,
as well as any non-government institutions that you do business with (ie, banks, employers, credit cards, memberships, etc).
? You should do your name change in the following order:
- Start with the Social Security office.
- Next, Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Passport.
- Order replacements for checks, business cards, credit cards and other documents that contain your old name.
? Make sure that once you start the name change process, you do all your name changes in a timely fashion.
Otherwise if something happens, like a car accident, you can be charged with falsifying your identity!! (If say, the names on your license and car registration don't match.)
I just asked a friend who did it on Friday - she said she thinks you can do either but she did SS first.
She said to warn you to bring the correct ID to the DL place, she had to have a primary (current DL) and a secondary (birth certificate or SS card).
I did my DL and SS on the same day. Went to the DL office first and then directly to SS. I had no issues at either place.
The only advice I have - wait until you have the official marriage certificate back from the city you filed with. It makes the process MUCH easier.
Thanks girls for the help-
has anyone gotten married in tarratn county? how long does it take to get the license back?
I was told i cant change my name until i get it back and i never got anything after the ceremony my priest just sent it in for us!?
I think mine took 4-6 weeks to come back. I was so anxious to change my name that it felt like it took forever. I believe there is a way on the Tarrant County website to search for your license and see if they've received it.
Tarrant County is a little slow. I think mine took about 4 or 6 weeks as well. You can go here to check to see if it's been filed: http://ccanthem.co.tarrant.tx.us/search.aspx?cabinet=marriage
I changed some CCs and bills then my DL and last my SS card. I didn't run into any problems as far as the order went. I changed several bills without needing my marriage license because they didn't require a copy of the certificate. Have fun! I was anxious too!
