IMO, PETA is out of control...

This was just posted on the pets board.  ...I hope this ad doesn't run on TV.....  Ugh!

Re: IMO, PETA is out of control...

  • Oy.  That's nice....*eye roll*
  • Totally agree. Though they lost me a long time ago with their March of Crimes Campaign against the March of Dimes. Crazy crazies.

  • The ad is strong.  The message should be disseminated, though.  I respect that they are willing to try.  The truth is ugly and people need to be aware of the ramifications of their actions.

Bubba the Love Sponge castrated and slit the throat of a pig live on air.  Clear Channel Communications did nothing until people started to complain and stopped listening to the station.  With actions like that in mind, PETA's tactics are mild.

  • That is totally crazy!  I understand that they are trying to say that you should considered finding animals in a shelter first but they can say it in a more tactful way!
  • I think the message is a valid one. IMO, not enough people consider rescue/shelters as their first option. Their constant "shock value" kind of messages even make me, an animal lover, immune to them. They're so crazy and over the top, that most people just dismiss them as a bunch of loonies and don't listen to the message.

OTOH, the Sarah McLachlan commercial for the ASPCA is one of the most effective adoption commercials I've seen in a long, long time. That will have a far more positive effect on adoptions than the PETA one ever will.

  • I disagree, I think the message is a good one, they're right, when you get a dog from a puppy store, that is one less dog from a shelter that will be adopted. I'm a huge supporter of Peta and also the ASPCA and a million other organizations. I agree that sometimes they go a bit over the top but that's only because they are so passionate about the cause.
  • I agree with PP that the Sarah McLachlan commercial is way more effective in encouraging adoption.  This commercial didn't make me want to adopt a shelter dog (and I'm an adopter of many), it just made me dislike PETA.
  • While I agree that you should always concider a shelter animal before a bought animal, I think this comercial is way over the top.  Peta is just making a reputation for themselves a crazy nut jobs, not really as animal lovers.

There was a situation a few years ago in Boston during Nutcracker season.  Peta was outside the theatre giving notes to all the children who's parents we wearing fur or leather.  The notes said "Your Mommy and Daddy kill kittens."  That's just uncalled for.

  • I agree the ASPCA commercial is much more effective.  I cry every time I see it.
  • I always cry at the ASPCA commercial.  I want to go and adopt all of them.
