Swine Flu

A few school districts near me are closed today due to suspected cases of the swine flu - this is seriously crazy!  Not to mention its causing semi-hysteria in the state. Any outbreaks near you?

I haven't heard of any. But the clinic where I work (huge pediatricians office) has been CRAZY busy this week. Everyone coming in thinking their children have it.

 I think the media has totally over hyped this. It is a strain of the flu. People get the flu (and some do die) every year. And yet, we are all up in arms about this strain.

2brides - not surprised to hear your clinic is busy!  On the news they listed symptoms as a fever, sore throat, or cough...! Um, it's allergy season!! Who doesn't have one of those symptoms???

Haven't heard anything here.  I know there was a potential case in Lowell, but then I didn't hear anything else about it.

My partner and I both work in public health for the state - communicable disease to be specific.  She is the office manager for the bureau and has fielded TONS of calls - so she is super busy with it.  I am less so as I am in the HIV program so unless there is an outbreak here in WI I won't get pulled in - but boy is this place humming with calls and stuff.

not much on my front.  I am washing my hands quite a bit though.  I will go through and wipe down my keyboards, tables, and door knobs this week though.  I do that quite a bit in cold season anyway so not a big deal.

Wow, that's crazy! This really is unreal. I haven't heard about anything around here... but I might have just missed it.

Say I told you so if I am wrong but I do think they are making a bigger deal out of this than what it really is. Each year in the US alone any where from 25 million to 60 million people get the flu with over 200k being hospitalized and 36,000 deaths so I really do not know why such a big deal is being made out of one type. Okay so we don't know a lot about the swine flu but I think the media and government officials are taking this to the extreme.

I work for a cleaning/restoration company and we have gotten a few calls to disinfect schools in our area.  They just closed down one of the bases over here because of 39 possible cases on the base.
