Help me plan my meals in San Diego

I am coming to town for a convention and looking for some amazing dining options. We are staying at Solamar, and would like to stay with short taxi (10-15 min max) or walking distance to our restaurants. We will travel one night only if needed.

1. Looking for one of the best restaurants in city- money not object. Taking out a few VIP clients. Open to most cuisines- must have excellent service.

2. Planning on doing a few nights of Mexican- since we are so close to border. What great options are there near our hotel- or short taxi away?  Not overly formal- something fun with awesome food and 'ritas.

3. Dining with a vegan one night. Any restaurants you know of with some vegan options on menu?  I do not want to go to a vegan restuarnat- just somewhere with options.

4. Looking for other decent lunch and dinner spots near cc.

5. Would love to spend free time Sunday going to a beach or a nice area to walk around and shop, sightsee, whatever. Looking for a fabulous, and hopefully outdoor seating lunch. What towns and restaurants should be explored?

6. Any other dining musts in the Gaslamp area.

Re: Help me plan my meals in San Diego

  • I would look into:

    George's Modern
    Baleen at Paradise Point

Both have great views and excellent food!

  • For Mexican, take a trip into Old Town, its close (I live in downtown & usually just take the trolley there). You'll get lots of delicious authentic Mexican there!

Hmm, in the gaslamp I love the gaslamp strip club, Basic (pizza). Little Italy is super close and has amazing food- Check out Buon Appetito (I live above it!!) Its amazing!!!

     Have a great trip!

  • Cas Guadalajara in Old TOwn for Mexican!

Flemings steakhouse or Ruth's Chris steakhouse in downtown are amazing for the first choice your looking for...

la Jolla is a great beach sity to walk around and have lunch, plenty of lunch cafe's, restaurants, etc.

  • Some restaurants to consider that are near the Gaslamp area:

The Ivy Hotel has a really nice restaurant for upscale dining

Bertrands at Mister A's in Bankers Hill area (short taxi ride)

    Laurel in Bankers Hill area

    Jade Theater

    Red Pearl Kitchen

    Flemings

For Mexican - Old Town or Miguels Cocina in Coronado or Pt. Loma

Coronado is awesome if you want to go to the beach/ sight seeing.  It is about 10 minutes from downtown.  Tons of restaurants and the famous Hotel Del Coronado.  The Del also has a good restaurant with outdoor seating.  Good place for brunch.

  • I have never been, but I have heard that Rainwaters on Kettner is supposed to be one of the best steakhouses in the country.

I have also heard that Osetra on 5th ave in the gaslamp is supposed to be amazing.  (Again way out of my price range but if you are looking to entertain clients you might look into that.)

I second Old Town for Mexican food however if you don't want to leave the Gaslamp than I would go to Freds Mexican Cafe for good food and great margs.
