Out of towner

Hi Ladies.  I'll be visiting with my DH and DS next week while he is on a business trip.  We are from MI and I was wondering if you could give me a few pointers on where to go/what to do in Indianapolis with an 18 month old.  Any good, safe parks?  Malls to check out?  Kid friendly eateries?  What is the transit system like?  Bus/taxis/subways??  Is it easy for an outsider to get around? TIA!

Re: Out of towner

  • Where in Indy will you be - downtown? Honestly, the bus system here isn't the best and we have no rail/subway to speak of. Your best bet would probably be to rent a car or deal with taxis.

If you're downtown, a lot of the stuff is a quick cab ride or even a walk.

I highly recommend the zoo and the gardens - I think the butterfly exhibit is almost ready? The children's museum is another must see - I think I heard that it is the largest in the US?

Circle Centre mall is downtown, and there are also two nice malls on the northside - Clay Terrace and Keystone Crossing.

There are a lot of kid-friendly restaurants, depending on what you are looking for :) www.indyethnicfood.com has non-chain and chain restaurant options to look over - it would depend on what you want to eat :)

Depending on the weather, there is also a water park on the west side of town in Plainfield and one on the SE-ish side of town, Raymond Park.

At one point the State museum (downtown) had a train exhibit, but I don't know if it is there any more.

I'm sure local moms will have more suggestions, I'm just trying to remember all of the things I've done with my nephew over the years.

Move along, nothing to see here.....
  • I think Elisabeth covered them all! I LOOOOOVEEE the Children's Museum and we have no kids and I am an adult :) Just sayin, it's GREAT!!!! I also love the Indianpolis Musuem of Art and grounds. It;s free and the grounds are incrediable and they are family friendly with some interactive exhibits. Welcome and enjoy!
