OPKs: I know we've covered this before

So I know this is old news, but I can't remember the verdict:

Generic/store brand OPKs - yay or nay?

I know it's important to consistently use the same brand of test, but how do we feel about that brand being say, the Target brand?

Discuss. Smile

Re: OPKs: I know we've covered this before

  • I chose to go the cheap route and get the dip stick kind.  I bought them at babyhopes.com based on my bffs rec.  I got really clear results and am happy with them.  I'm also going the full medical route so I'll be having regular u/s and will be triggering.  So watching for the LH surge is important for me, but not enough to pay big $.  I'd rather save a few bucks for the good pregnancy tests so I don't get mixed results then.

This is the kind I use.  Not sexy, but cheap and really easy to read.  I know several people who've used them and no one ever complained about unclear results.

  • we used cvs brand for the beginging of each cycle and then when we got close I used both the cvs and a digital.  We called for out iui when we got a smilely face on the digital.

  • we drove ourselves crazy the first month using the cheap target ones. Now we use the CBE smiley faces and life is much better.

The Target ones were hard to read?

Dip stick meaning - pee in a cup and dip the stick in? Hm... Cheap and easy to read sounds good, but peeing into a cup at work...  Confused

for us, yes. according to the directions we never really got a positive (your line is supposed to be the same as or darker than the test...didnt happen), whereas on the clear blue easy tests, the smiley pops right up! easy peasy.   It might just be A's hormone levels, but it really didnt work for us - not to mention we used twice the amount of tests obessing over the results! there goes the cost savings right there.

bonus about the CBE tests is that you can use them first thing in the morning. no having to test at work or hold your urine or anything like that.

Yes...you do have to pee in a cup.  But I got those little paper cups like for ketchup samples.  That way I can either flush it or toss in the sanitary container.  You really don't need much pee to test.  The line pops up relatively quickly and for me, it was easier to hide than a big POAS.

Where do you ladies buy your OPK's?

Target, pharmacy, grocery store all carry them.  Online there's drugstore.com and the store TwoTrue mentioned, babyhopes.com

  • As usual, y'all are the best Smile  No number of books can compare to real life first accounts.

J - that's a great idea about the little ketchup cups

Elise - I'm loving able to test in the morning and an easy read! Are you using the digital CBE or regular?

  • we didn't really use them, so i'm not really much help. the few we did use were target and we didn't have a problem really, but i can definitely see how two's cheapo strips or the cbe ones with the smileys might be better (or at least easier to read).

Has anyone ordered from this site?  All their reviews are good so I'm thinking about getting my OPK's from them.

digital (and yes, i just grabbed the box from the bathroom to make sure!). the last time i got them at target they were $25 for 7 tests and at this point we've pinpointed ovulation enough to only have to use 2 or 3 tests/month.  CBE also has an expensive fertility monitor ($100+) but thats not what we use.

  • ps - i currently have 2 unopened boxes, so if things go well, one might be headed your way Wink

Thanks so much for all the info!  And that's a better price than I'd seen online - ya gotta love Target Smile  I would be very excited to be on the receiving end of that extra box, and not because of the savings!!! Wink

I actually looked into the expensive monitors, but them seem to be better suited for doing it the old fashioned way - when you can -ahem- do it at the drop of a hat.

  • I use early-pregnancy-test.com but bought from Amazon.

If you don't mind the cup and don't need the smiley (or want to use the before a digital) they're super cheap and easy. I believe they also have mid-stream tests that are a good deal.
