WTF is going on!?!?!?

I really help that DS is just going through an extended growth spurt because I am going on a major lack of sleep in the last week.

He slept GREAT last Sunday and Monday nights (7:30-3am, 3:30-6ish), but ever since then, he has been up 3-6 times a night.  It is INSANE!  The last two days he has barely napped too.

DH and I are truely at our wits end (me much more so than DH since I'm the one getting up at night).  We haven't changed our schedules/routines at all.  He usually fights naps, but hasn't really had an issue at night.

The only thing I can think of other than the growth spurt is the change in weather.  His room gets pretty warm from the afternoon sun, so we have been playing around with windows open/closed, ceiling fan off/on, different jammies, etc.  I thought he was too hot at night and that might be the reason why he has been getting up so much at night, but he isn't sweaty, hot, or even cold to the touch.

He doesn't like to be swaddled, so that is out.  We use a pacifier, but he doesn't wake up wanting it.  We have tried increasing and decreasing the amount of formula he is getting.  Some times when he wakes up, he cries for food, but then won't finish a bottle.  We have tried rocking back to sleep, which helps, but only for a half hour or so.  The last 2 nights we have tried rice cereal with his last bottle of the night (per pedi's suggestion), but that doesn't make a difference.  He doesn't seem gassy or like he is in pain after eating.  Soemtimes he spits up, but it isn't usually a huge amount.

Can anyone help me out here?  I'm sure I'm leaving out some things that we have tried, but I could really use some help here.  I go back to work in a week and I can't be getting up so much at night.  I'll be a zombie.

Sorry this is so long, BTW.

Re: WTF is going on!?!?!?

  • I think he may be teething. Or did he recently learn a new skill? I've heard that babies get restless at night when learning a big skill. Like they're "practicing" in their sleep.

Can you give him baby tylenol yet? That may help when he gets up if he's teething. Or rub some baby orajel on his gums?  I know my DS started teething at 3 months. His first tooth didn't pop through for a good 2 weeks.

Good luck, I feel for you!

  • I thought of that, but he doesn't seem to be drooling at all.  Isn't that supposed to be a sign of teething?  He always has his hands in his mouth, but that has been going on for quite awhile.  I definitely don't feel any bumps in his mouth either.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'll definitely keep an eye on it.

I wish he could just tell me what was going on!

  • What about a cold/ear infection?  Waking up a lot/not wanting to be laying down is indicative of an ear infection often times.  Maybe have him checked out?  When is/was his 3 month appt?
  • If it was an ear infection, wouldn't he be pulling on his ear or rubbing it or something?  The same thing with a cold....wouldn't he have a runny/stuffy nose, sneezing, etc?

He isn't doing any of that.

Maybe if it is still going on tomorrow, I will give the pedi a call.

  • you've probably done this, but have you taken his temp? That could tell you if he has an ear infection or is sick or something. Ella has been up a lot lately, but nothing like what you're describing...I'm sure there must be growth spurt issues going on too, but it sounds like something else as well....so sorry! and I hope he gets back to his schedule for you tonight!

Hailey's 1st ear infection had NO symptoms at all.  Not even poor sleeping.  Her appetite was wonderful, no pulling on the ear, just a slight runny nose that I attributed to teething (she was about 9 months old - and had just gone for her well visit 3 days prior).

One Sunday, she woke up with her eyes glued shut (rather, we checked on her at 9 am and thats what we found).  I called the pedi and took her in, and they said she had a massive ear infection...that the fluid was so backed up, it was coming out her eyes, causing them to be stuck shut.  I felt like a terrible mommy, because the on call pedi didn't understand how I had no idea Hailey was sick.  Although, after hearing Hailey had no symptoms - other than the minor runny nose, the doctor was shocked.

Long story, but what I'm getting at is, maybe he is starting an ear infection?  He may be fussy because of it...even though he isn't experiencing other symptoms.  I would call the pedi tomorrow to have him checked- especially if he is normally a good sleeper.

Sorry this is so long, and I don't mean to worry you more.....just wanted to throw my story in there.   Good luck!

  • Hey Mrs.B~  could be a 3 month thing...Jack's sleeping has changed in the past week now as well.  I just attibuted it to the reflux, but it could be more.  I've also noticed that what seems like everyday he is doing something new. Whether its grasping for things more, starting to roll half way from back to belly, laughing more, whatever...but it could be that it is a growth spurt, from what I've read they don't always have to do with inches, it could have to do with them developmentally too.  Our lil babes brains are growing too.  Best of luck to all of us...soon enough they will turn that corner and ease up on us....I hope!
  • Maybe it is a growth spurt....hope you get a better night sleep tonight!
  • I hope you can figure this out so you can all get a better night's sleep.
