Your favorite hidden Tucson gem?

So in the spirit of getting this board a little more action, and since it seems like we have a mix of old and new Tucson residents visiting, let's get some threads going on our favorite things in Tucson.

So this thread is about any hidden gems - could be anything that you think is fabulous but that the rest of us Tucson nesties don't know about yet...

Ready...set...GO!

Re: Your favorite hidden Tucson gem?

  • I love Pico de Gallo in South Tucson - the tacos (I either get carne asada or shrimp) with the fresh corn tortillas are delish! DH nearly always get the burria burrito.  It's a drive from where we live on the eastside, but definitely worth a trip. Be prepared to wait for your food though - they cook to order and get backed up during peak periods.

Also, a blood orange margarita on the patio at Blanco is a really nice way to relax after a busy week and a good place to hang out with friends.

  • Saing Thai restaurant in Rita Ranch (by the Safeway) is really good

Eclectic Cafe on Tanque Verde & Sabino Canyon is good--I LOVE Marc's Chicken & Chorizo with roasted red peppers and artichoke hearts on penne pasta

Ghinis French Cafe on Prince and Campbell is a cute place

  • Food: Bison Witches on Fourth, Charlie's Tavern on Dodge, and for the best Mexican- Casa Del Rio on 22nd and Pantano.

Drink: Surly Wench on Fourth, Music Box on 22nd, Bistro 44 on Tanque Verde, Caffe Diva on Campbell and Glenn

Music: Plush on Fourth, Chez Lounge Fourth at Toole,  Sakura on Tanque Verde has nice jazz on the patio while you are having dinner or drinks.

Free Poker: Charlies on Dodge S. of River

Fun/ Entertainment: Botannical Gardens during Butterfly season, free concerts at Reid Park, Putting on the Dog Fundraiser next weekend for the Humane Society (HSSA.org), The Loft Theatre for indy films or The Rocky Horror Picture Show in October, Casa Video for renting old/ odd videos, and there is a new dog park at Reid Park on the west side that is wonderful and so clean! :)

  • What is the dog thing for the Humane Society???? I would love to bring my dog along, when and where? ( I think I've seen it in that past at Reid Park but could be wrong)

For Mexican food you have to go to Michas on 4th or 6th I can't remember at the moment and El Minuto on Church yummy, my dad is Mexican and he is very picky about his Mexican food b/c his family makes it the best but he does enjoy these places

Get out and hike to some cool water spots like 7 falls, romaro pools, chiva falls and many more. . .?

  • Mexican Food: San Carlos Grill on Silverbelle and Grant in the Albertson shopping center.  Their home made verde enchalada sauce is out of this world!  Don't forget to try the guacamole or the tres leches cake.

Pizza: Mario's Pizza on 1st and Ft. Lowell

Greek: Shish Kebob House on Broadway accross from Park Place.

The Tucson Roller Derby is fun to watch.  Next one is May 17th.  Kitt Peak is free to walk around and explore - not to mention a lot cooler than it is in Tucson.

  • It's a fundraiser dog fashion show. I believe dogs are allowed, check their site at HSSAZ.org

    :)

  • I love strolling around the Tucson Botanical Gardens - or, better yet, taking a 'brown bag' lunch and eating under one of the shade trees.
