Ohio nestie planning Oregon trip...

Hello from Ohio. My DH and I have had a rough few months with repeat miscarriages and are in desperate need of a long weekend getaway. We adore Willamette Valley Pinot's and thought that heading out there would be a great trip for us. I'm looking for any thought or suggestions...

Stay in Portland or wine country?

Places to stay?

Restaurants?

Tour companies for wine tours? Or can we tour wineries on our own?

Suggestions for other activities?

Thank you so much for your help!!

Re: Ohio nestie planning Oregon trip...

  • We'd thought about staying at the White House B&B in Portland, because I've heard there is not much else to do down in wine country, besides wineries and it might be better to stay up in Portland. Any thoughts on the White House or other hotel recs?

  • I'd recommend staying in Portland and just driving out to the wine country, or taking a tour during the day, because then you can walk around downtown at night and take in the city. Really all of the hotels in downtown Portland are nice, just make sure they really are downtown. Some that are in the Lloyd Center/Convention Center area list themselves as 'downtown.' Check out the Embassy Suites on Pine, Hotel Monaco, Hotel Lucia, and the Benson.

If you have time during the day, check out the Portland Saturday Market (food, crafts, gifts). It's open on Sunday too.

  • Thank you for your suggestions PDX! That makes me reconsider the White House B&B, b/c I think it's a little bit out of downtown, I remember seeing the convention center and public transportation to downtown listed on the website. We'd also looked at Hotel Monaco, so maybe we need to reconsider that....

  • Ditto PP. Stay in Portland. The wineries are close enough to Portland for an easy day trip and there's more to do and more choices for accomodations in Portland.

You can easily drive to the wineries but if you want to go for a car, limo or more, you might check out http://www.besolucky.com/ . There are other towncar / limo companies too.

You might check out the OregonGetaways bio and ThePortlandBio for some suggestions. You'll find links at the bottom of my bio.

What are your particular interests? Foods you like? Hiking? Other sports activities? Or are you looking for some good spas? All of the above?

p.s. I'm sorry for the rough time you're going through. Hopefully we'll have some great weather and lots of rest, relaxation and fun for your trip.

  • If you're looking for something a bit more historic, check out The Governor and The Benson (that's where the President stays when he's in town). Also very nice is the Heathman. All downtown and very convenient.

You can easily get away with cabs and walking in Portland, for the most part. Day trips, like the wineries or a trip to Multnomah Falls, you can arrange for a rental car.

  • Thank you again for all of the suggestions. I will definitely check out the other hotels listed. I do agree that it would be nice for use to stay somewhere that we can walk around and enjoy nightlife and just drive down for day trips to the wineries. How far is the coast? I think that could be a nice day trip too! I appreciate all the info and well wishes and keep any suggestions coming!

  • You can easily do the coast in a day but you might enjoy it more if you spent a night. It's so incredibly relaxing and you'll never get a better nights' sleep (something about the waves crashing).

I don't know how long your weekend is but you could spend 2 nights in Pdx (1 day doing the wineries, 1 day in Pdx) and 1 night at the Coast and you'd have a lovely trip.

  • The coast is 1 1/2 to 2 hrs away, depending on traffic and which beach you head to. It's an easy day trip.
