Childcare options?

Hi all! I recently moved to Evanston and am expecting my first child in June. I started looking into childcare in the area and am getting a bit nervous! Every center I called has quite a long waiting list. I am on a waiting list for the Childcare Network of Evanston for inhome. They also put me in touch with Action for Children to give me a list of referals I could work with for both inhome and centerbased. I guess I am a little shocked at the lack of openings in the area! Back home this wasn't a problem, so I am a bit shocked and nervous we aren't going to find anyone. Anyone have any reccomendations? Craigslist has scared me :)

Re: Childcare options?

  • if you want a nanny, i'd recommend joining SitterCity.com.  You can create a profile and find nannies/babysitters, do background checks (for a fee) and narrow down your search from there.  interview some potential caregivers and you may find a great nanny that is cheaper than a day care center.  especially since a lot of college women at northwestern are around.  good luck!

  • Unfortunately, it is very difficult to find any openings.

You can also try joining NPN parents www.npnparents.org and posting to see if anyone knows of any openings.  We found our nanny through that site.  We have been on daycare waiting lists since before I even hit 20 weeks and my son is now 7 months old and still NO openings at those centers.

  • I would also recommend contacting any colleges in the area.  I'm sure that you're looking for something more full time, but a lot of times education majors don't have a teaching job and would love to nanny right out of college.  Other times, alumni who are looking for work will still check their school's job board.

  • You might also try http://www.naeyc.org/

It is the National Association for the Education of Young Children and they list a lot of centers in Evanston that are members.  It might be a good resource for some centers you have not tried.  And to be a member, NAEYC has some standards that must be met which may give you some additional peace of mind.

  • I also reccommend www.care.com
