Re: City gals, a D&R question for you

  • I voted never. I like the regular refrigerator and would hate to have to bend so low to get to the veges in the bottom shelf.

My dream refrigerator is a SS french door, freezer in the bottom...now I am drooling. LOL

  • I'd love it. Not only would it give you more counter space, but it just looks so clean and tidy. Ya know??

if it's just 2 people I think it would be great, I LOVE my counterspace and it's so clean looking.  Over time the novelty would probably wear off though.

  • i voted yes but not my first choice because my italy, london, & australia apartments either had smaller, lower fridges and/or the fridge in another room and it was ok but mostly a hassle. i'd be more amenable to that set up/less fridge space if i had a separate wine/beer fridge ;)

I wish we could have a separate beer fridge. I did in my Boston apt. Actually, I'm realizing this is not such a good idea since we would lose some space for a set of drawers that I think would be better.

  • that's the other thing, i couldn't give up the drawer space. though i do love the clean lines and counter space in ina's kitchen.?

    now i'm dreaming of the time when i will have a space for a beer/wine fridge . . . ?

  • I almost went to look at an apartment that had this style fridge/freezer. i was drooling over it.....but the kitchen was immaculate - chef's style. I feel as long as its broken into separate units (fridge & freezer separate) it could work.

  • I never really thought of myself as a traditionalist, but I would be freaked out by a kitchen without a visible fridge. I could deal with one of those full size hidden fridges that look like part of the cabinetry, but to me, a kitchen would look weird without the fridge.

The extra counter space would be a huge bonus, I can't deny that. But if you need the extra counter space then wouldn't you need extra room in the fridge to store all of the food that you would prepare on that counter space?

If I was single, didn't cook and didn't entertain and didn't care about taking home many leftovers, I could see it. I can see why people would dig it, but not me.

  • I think it would work for me. If it was just DH and I, the small fridge would be fine for us. We have a full size one now and it's usually empty. lol I only buy perishable groceries as I need them. Stocking up our fridge is just not feasible. Half the time the fruits and veggies go bad 'cause we don't eat them fast enough...so now I only buy stuff I'll be using within the next few days and of course the essentials (ie. milk, bread and eggs).

Let's not forget that her Hamptons house has a whole other building with her work kitchen, so I am sure she has a humongous fridge there.

We try to buy only what we will use for the upcoming week too.  The times where this would be a real PITA would be when we had company and around the holidays.

DH and I definitely think it would more trouble than a blessing for us.
