I used to live there

Hello Phoenix nesties.

I used to live in Phoenix as a child.  We left in 1989 when I was 11 and I have many fond memories of Phoenix.

My husband and I have talked about visiting there and looking up the places I used to live. We used to live in Moon Valley.  It was nice when I was little but is it nice now?  I would imagine that it would still be nice.

Also where would you guys recommend visiting.  I am sure things have changed a lot since I was there.  Is that mall metrocenter still open?  That place was so much fun when I was little.

Re: I used to live there

  • I haven't heard of Moon Valley, so I'm not sure if it's nice or not.  I looked it up- is it near Bell and 7th Ave?  I couild be wrong, but that's not the greatest area anymore--- Central Phoenix is really hit and miss though.  I've heard Metrocenter is pretty ghetto, but I haven't been there.  The nicer malls are Scottsdale Fashion Square, Desert Ridge, Kierland Common's, Chandler Mall, San Tan Mall--- I'm sure there are more, but those are the ones I go to.

I can tell you things will be extremely different from 1989!!  I've only lived here 4 years, but my family had a vacation home in the mid 90's in North Scottsdale, and I didn't recognize half the city when I finally moved here.  There are new freeways (the 101 and 202), new cities that were just a small town in the middle of nowhere, new malls, resorts, golf courses, and of course, tons of housing developments.  If you are coming on vacation I would recommend staying in Scottsdale, near the mall, and definately renting a car.

  • Please, please please don't go Metrocenter!!  It has become a bad place where a lot of gangs hang out.  There is a newer mall up at 79th ave and Bell road called Arrowhead that is pretty nice.  There is also Paradise valley mall off of Thunderbird/Cactus and tatum.  I would also recommend Kierland Commons and Desert Ridge (loop 101 and tatum).  They are fun places as well.
  • Yes Moon Valley is off of 7th street.  If I remember right it was between thunderbird and bell, I think.  Is Moon Valley dangerous ?

Hmm metrocenter is bad now.  Too bad I had a lot of fun there.  But yes I also remember Paradise Valley mall and that one was very pretty.

We used to go to Scottsdale every once  in a while.  In fact that is one thing I miss about Phoenix, you could actually vacation there.  I remember my family used to go to a really nice resort in Scottsdale that was a Hyatt? It had a little sand beach area with a waterslide in a clocktower.  That place was a lot of fun.

Sometimes I wonder if maybe we shouldn't visit and just leave all my memories in a state of perpetual childhood perfection.  Knowing what might have come of my old home and all of my favorite hangouts could be depressing.

  • I grew up in Phx and still live here...well, Avondale. I don't know, it would really ba a trip to come back. There is also Westgate in the West Valley with the University of Phoenix stadium, jobbing.com arena, and a bunch of nice shops.

It's not all bad here. But if you fear ruining your childhood memories, then avoid your old hood :)

Ahh really that is too bad.  I remember there used to be really expensive mansions across 7th street from our house.  I also remember there was a very nice golf club nearby.  It is hard to imagine it going downhill.

  • I honestly haven't been in that area lately, so I don't know if it has been run down at all. I could do some investigative research Big Smile
  • Thanks but I guess there is no need.  Thank you though that is really sweet.  As long as we won't get carjacked or anything I guess we could visit my  old house and old school.  It is just so strange to hear how it went downhill but I guess that happens everywhere.  Mostly I am just curious how everything has changed.  A few months ago we returned to my husband's hometown and he showed me all of the homes he lived in while there.  He would also like to do that when our kids are older.  I would like to do the same but that would involve a trip to Phoenix.  I do miss it and have many fond memories of growing up there.  One thing I remember about moon valley is that on Christmas Eve the whole area would put out luminaries and we would drive around on Christmas Eve looking at all the lights.  I live by Saint Louis now and it just isn't the same.

Oh and Phoenix had really good mexican food..

  • I know Moon Valley- it is older- looks like it was really nice in the 80's and 90's! It is still nice now- older homes, but still very nice. There are areas around it that are not nice, but there are still million dollar homes, nice neighborhoods, resorts, golf course(s), AJ's supermarket (the high end supermarket around here).

You could stay close to or even in Moon Valley in a very nice resort. i can't remember the names of them, I haven't driven over there in many months. Staying at Squaw Peak would be a good idea- then you're close to your old neighborhood, and right on the 51 which will shoot you down or up to wherever else you want to go- minutes from Scottsdale, etc.

I don't think you would be disappointed with what Moon valley looks like today. I don't know it from back then, but it's still a nice neighborhood now!
