Sinus infection? How do you know?

I made an appt with the doctor for this afternoon, but since I never go to the doctor for cold symptoms, I'm wondering if I'm just wasting their time.

I've been beyond congested with what I don't want to describe for a week now. This morning it was so bad I couldn't make the neti pot work on one side and my sinuses hurt so bad it was radiating to my jaw and teeth.

I thought it was just allergies, but that would drain clear, right?

Re: Sinus infection? How do you know?

  • I usually know I have a sinus infection if my nose is in so much pain when I breath as well as having a headache.
  • I know when what comes out of my nose isn't clear.  And when it starts to drain down my throat and I want to yak.
  • this is gross, but your mucus would be green.
  • EML, that sounds about right.

And bek, since you went there - it's yellow. And seriously, it's like it's being fed to me from another source. There is no freaking way my head contains this much gunk (I'm sure some might disagree with that).

  • From the symptoms you are describing, I would say you have a sinus infection. Whenever I have one, I always get pain through my jaw and I can barely open my eyes because my sinus area is so swollen.
  • It sounds like it's a sinus infection.  You said you get seasonal allergies?  My first batch of allergies almost always turns into a spring sinus infection.  Allergy mucus for me is never a color.  And if it's yellow, next step is green if you don't get antibiotics.  And make sure they give you something to get the mucus out, that way when you blow your nose your head will clear up.
  • when you tap on your cheeks (up near your eyes) is it painful?
  • Bek, yep, it's not a fun tapping. And I had a tough time getting one of my eyes open this morning. I was late for work waiting to be able to drive.

Looks like I've let it percolate long enough. The receptionist at the doctor's office laughed when she heard my voice. I sound like Elmer Fudd.

  • Duff, my allergies gave me a sinus infection last week.  I was so congested when I called the dr. that they didn't bother to ask me what the need for the appointment was.  I started feeling better after about a days worth of antibiotics.  I had the same netipot problem before I went to the dr. too.  The water was like a drip in the faucet.  Not pleasant.  Good luck, I hope you get some relief.  I was in agony last week.
