Moms - ? re. Stage 2 foods
Here is my dumb mommy moment from the weekend: I got totally overwhelmed when grocery shopping for Stage 2 foods for Elizabeth, I hardly bought any! I was looking at all the Gerber Stage 2 foods, and there were so many weird combinations of things she hasn't had yet (mixed berry, mango and kiwi, vanilla apple, etc etc), how do I know they're okay to give her? They don't make Stage 1 foods in just mango or kiwi or berry...I thought you were only supposed to give combo foods when your child has had the components separately? So, I ended up just getting stuff she's already had: carrots, pears, squash, and then one combo of sweet potatoes and apple. I would love to try all these new foods with Elizabeth, but I'm afraid she'll have a reaction to something (even though she hasn't had a reaction to anything we've given her yet). What did/do you do? She has a check-up with her pedi on Friday, so I plan on asking her, too, but I'd love to hear from my fellow moms. I felt like such an idiot standing there in the baby aisle. Thanks!
Re: Moms - ? re. Stage 2 foods
This is just my thought, but if she has had quite a few different foods and hasn't had a reaction yet, you can try a combo one on its own. I seem to remember doing blueberries and something together for the first time. As long as it is only 2 items, it is pretty easy to identify if there ends up being a problem. After a while, I was giving her different foods every day....
This is just how I handled it - b/c my DH and I both have some food sensitivities and allergies freak me out. I'm on the strict end of the spectrum, though.
I only gave her the combined foods if she'd had the components or if I knew they didn't have a high potential of being allergenic (I avoided citrus/strawberries until she was 1). Once she got on table foods/turned one (when potential for reactions decreases) I got more adventurous with the solid versions of these foods. Strawberries are one of her favorites now, but it turns out that like her mom, she doesn't even like citrus.
The thing about those baby foods is they don't necessarily pay attention to what pedi's recommend - for instance - baby desserts - not necessary from a nutritional perspective, but Gerber still makes them.
I worried about this too, especially since Anthony DID have reactions to other foods.
Eventually I bought one jar of a combo dinner...I can't remember WHAT it was. But I figured, if he had a reaction...I would then try introducing each item seperately. (Say kiwi/strawberry...then wait a few days try just strawberry or just kiwi) if there is a reaction to that sole item, you know that was the culprit.
That was how we discovered the strawberry allergy. Not fun, but at the same time if you give them 1 ingredient at a time, it'll take FOREVER before they've tried everything!
Ditto the PPs. I started with the combos that were just 2 ingredients, one of which he had already had. Assuming no reactions, I moved on to other blends. Once we had our 9 mo appt and pedi OK pretty much everything, I've been less cautious about new foods, b/c we don't have a family history of allergies and by this point, he's had most of the foods in baby food.
I actually just bought the apple, mango & kiwi for the first time this weekend b/c I had never seen it before!
Thanks for all your replies! I will have to go back to the grocery store when I have more time to really look at everything, and hopefully find more combos with one of the ingredients being something she's already had. And then I'll ask the pedi about the combos of things she hasn't had yet.
As for deciding she might be ready for Stage 2, we just figured she's been through almost all of the different Stage 1 fruits and veggies; plus, she's been finishing whole containers of the Stage 1s at day care, so we thought the bigger servings might be good (if she doesn't finish them, at least they'll last a couple of days).
