yard sale advice

I am getting together next weekend with some friends and having a big yard/garage sale. We have a ton of stuff to get rid of, but I've never had a yard sale before and I am not sure how to price some of the items.

My hub is selling a lawn mower (push), a leaf blower, and a weed eater... all around 3 years old and in good condition... does anyone have any suggestions as to what are decent prices for those? I don't want to overprice and piss people off, haha.

Also, I have a bedspread set from Pier 1 that I am not using. The tag on bag that holds it says $250, and I think I only paid $50 for it, but I am not sure what to ask for it. Anyone have any suggestions?

We plan on doing $1, $2, $3, etc bins for some of the other stuff. I will be so glad to get this crap out of my house/garage, I'm like "give me anything for it!" lol

Re: yard sale advice

  • The yard equipment: I have no clue but asked Bob, he said depending on what you paid for it to depreciate it to 75% of full retail for one year, 50% for two years, and 25% for three years. You might have better luck just listing the more expensive items in a classified...it's a thought. Anyway good luck with the sale.

  • I like what Jane said about depreciating it and then pricing it.  Also, people will negotiate you to death at yard sales, so you might wanna price somewhere in the middle, that way you have some room for price dropping.  Good luck.

I agree, price it a little bit higher so if they want to haggle (and most people do) you will have room to come down and will still make about what you had wanted to off the item. Indicate somewhere that things are negotiable. While I would not take great pains I'd wipe down some of the yard equipment so it looks as good (new) as possible.

  • I usually use my aunt's rule of thumb....price the items at 10% of whatever you paid for them.  As long as the items are in fairly good condition!  If you think that people will want to haggle over prices you can always mark things up just a bit.  That way you have a little wiggle room.

If your hubby's outdoor stuff does not sell...you could always put an add on craigslist!  You might even get a few dollars more!

Hope you guys make a ton of money :)
