Acne treatment?

Andrea used to be on proactiv but its not safe to use while pg so she's stopped using it.  she's having a hard time with the increase in breakouts and is dying for a solution.  any ideas for an OTC pg-safe remedy?  Are any acne meds safe to use while pregnant?

Re: Acne treatment?

  • Let me know if you find a solution.  My skin has always given me problems.  I use Clinque because I've found it's not very drying at least for my skin. I don't know about what is/isn't safe though....

  • i just did a smidge of research on babycenter and the article said that topical treatments w/ less than 2% salicylic acid are safe.  but I dont know how comfortable i feel about that since salicylic acid definitely causes birth defects (though generally in higher doses).  There is a wholistic facial place near us so i might just make Andrea an appointment for some of thier recommendations.
  • I can check with the woman I nanny for (she is a dermatologist)

  • Yes, there are a few class B (aka safe for pregnancy) prescription acne meds.

I was seeing a derm for a while, and unfortunately none worked for me, but I'm an unusually tough case and the class X drugs I was using pre-TTC weren't working for me either, so...

Good luck to Andrea. I feel her pain.

  • How about Dr. Bronners liquid castile soaps?  They've worked wonders for my face but can be a little drying so I use a dab of baby lotion afterwards to moisturize.

The Philosophy line is also really good.  It's on the expensive side but well worth the money.

and I THINK it has NO  saylic acid n( i just checked the ingrediants, or very little), and works like a charm I lurve it. A LOT! IT's similar to proactiv w/o all the bad stuff.

which I haven't tried yet, but have heard good things about. I've been meaning to get some.

  • thanks for all the recs!

Meegs, i went ahead and ordered that acne wash - i'll have andrea report back on how she likes it :)

  • Philosophy doesn't work for me (I hate it a lot).

Don't know how she feels about being on a long term antibiotic regimen, but I think amoxicillin is pregnancy safe (I was on doxycycline and I know that isn't).  Maybe clindamyacin lotion?  I hope Meegs' rec works, I might try it out too!

I actually ended up ordering it right after I posted that. So Andrea and I will have to compare results!  :-)

  • I'm guessing this wouldn't be an option for you, since you want to avoid salicylic acid altogether, but the stuff I use (and am still using, until I have reason to think perhaps I shouldn't) is Neutrogena's Advanced Solutions set. I only use the cleanser (0.5% salicylic acid) and the lotion, though, not the topical cream. From what I read online, it seems that cleansers (where the stuff is only on your face for a second) are less of a concern than creams you leave on, and 0.5% is well under the 2% mark.

You can see the full ingredient list here, if you're curious (drugstore.com listing for the set): http://tinyurl.com/dka7ch
