Business start-up...

Has anyone had to go through the process of starting their own business?  If you are willing, I would love information about it.  I feel there is so much information out there that I don't even know where I need to start.  Any websites, advice, etc is much appreciated!!

TIA!!

Re: Business start-up...

  • i was pretty dead set on starting up my online stationery biz. i took a course at the community college that was specifically for aspiring entreprenuers. i would highly recommend that you look into taking a class. the one i took answered a lot of questions i had and educated me on a lot of unfamiliar territory. it also walked us through writing a business plan. even though i haven't moved foreward with my business i'm still glad i took the class.

have you joined the forum called The Switchboards yet? its very very helpful.

  • You should probably contact an attorney and do a consultation.  You'll need to do important things like form a company, so that if the business fails you don't lose your house.  They can help you write a business plan and advise you on a lot of the ins and outs and things you need to do.  Bif is an attorney and this is one of the areas he practices in.
  • you need to research what type of business is best for you to know how to file etc. S-corp, Incorporated, sole proprieter etc. Depending on the business you will need a privledge license from the state....an identification number from the gov. A copyright on the name (and research names to make sure it doesn't interfere with another company to avoid law suites). Insurance etc. It's a lot of paperwork to start up which scares a lot of people away, but if you do it right from the beginning and get all your ducks in a row, take the time and have the financial backing for it, it can be very rewarding. Taking a course at a cc isn't a bad idea.

  • I'm glad you asked this question, because I've been thinking the same thing.  I found a good website yesterday that had a ton of info.  I don't have it at work but could post later or email you with it.
  • Thanks ladies for the advice.  I will put my research skills to the test and see what I can come up with.  Katie, I haven't heard of the forum before but will look into it.

I think I will look into a class at the community college while I'm at it.

    Thanks again ladies!

  • Yes I am a small business owner, when on start up i faced the same problems which any new starter faces, I contacted professional for guidance and got guidance ranging from working capital, risk management, debt collection etc. I would suggest you to do the same.
