Hi Ladies!
I am a MD Nestie and DH and I are going to be relocating soon (hopefully). I have two job offers with the same company (the one I am with now) but two completely different jobs. One in New Jersey and one in San Diego! DH and I are really leaning towards the San Diego position, but are waiting on some of the final details to come through. So in the mean time, we are trying to find out as much information as we can on the area. We have visited several times before and actually have family that live there (who we are asking questions to also), but I thought I would try here as well since I heart the Nest!!
DH and I would probably look to rent a townhome for the first year, to make sure we like the area and decide on buying etc. We are hoping to start a family soon and would expect to have visitors from the East Coast so we are looking for 2-3 bedrooms in a dog friendly area (i.e. if we dont have a yard, we would like to have a dog park close by). We know the cost of living is higher there, but we are pretty prepared for it coming from the east coast, close to DC where it isn't exactly cheap either! ha! Do you ladies have any recommendations on specific locations to look for? The position is in San Diego, CA 92123. Thanks and we are really hoping to hear more this week and make it definite! I am totally a west coast girl at heart!!
Re: Hi Ladies! MD Nestie Here!
Well, DH would probably have to work in Downtown San Diego so anywhere where that would ba a possible commute. DH has a two hour commute now so anything from 30 - 1 hour would probably work. I'd love to have a decent mall near by, doenst need to be spectacular but I just find its easier when having to pick up birthday presents and what not if its maybe 30 minutes or less away. Same probably for the grocery stores, preferrably 20 minutes or so...
We are planning to have children shortly so schools are of interest to us, but that would still be a few years away by the time they are old enough to attend. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

You will find some beautiful homes (at really great prices) in Scripps Ranch (92131) and Rancho Penasquitos (92129). The same is true of Rancho Bernardo, however, DH and I both work in the South Bay, so commute time is really important to us... that being said, Rancho Penasquitos Blvd. is as far north as we would go.
Tierrasanta (92124) is worth checking out as well.
When I came to San Diego 4 yrs ago, we lived in 92123. Spectrum Center. We lived in a nicer gated appartment complex and across the street they were building some cute modern brownstone type townhomes.
Avion at Spectrum was the complex and it was dog friendly. People would let their dogs run in a big grassy area outside the complex walls.
That area was nice because it was right next to three major interstates but not so close that you felt it. Only 10 minutes from downtown. But odd, because it was really still very much an industrial area, with lots of business offices, ie Jack in the Box, Nokia etc. There is a brand new YMCA there and a Starbucks and Robecks in walking distance along with other fast food.
Lots of dog parks, you can search it and find many in the city. I like the dog beaches at Ocean beach and Del Mar.
There are many great places, it depends on what you're looking for, beach access or more space etc.
Good luck!

Hey! I am from MD too - we moved out here in 2005 from Columbia.
We had a 3BR 3BA townhouse in Columbia with three floors and we had to downsize BIG time when we moved out here. You will probably have some sticker shock when you start looking at places. Unless you want to live way out, you'll have to go down in size.
We live in PB (Pacific Beach) which is close to the water, and very dog friendly. We've lived here for 3 years and love it. However, we have a very small place - 2BR 1 BA which is not much for myself, DH, our black lab and 7 month old baby.
It looks like the position is in Serra Mesa/Kearny Mesa area which is where my husband works. It's a decent place, close to Miramar Air station (so you'll hear lots of Top Gun jets taking off!) The housing there is reasonable too. It's a pretty central location, close to the major highways (I5, I15) so I would look in that general area.
If you have specific questions - you can email me at sallycummings2003 at yahoo dot com
Good luck!
Housing prices are starting to get normal again
We have just started looking at houses for rent and have found that they are within $200-$300 of the price of the same type of apt (2bed/2 bath) but with the added bonus of being a bit more pet friendly and having a yard.
We live in Escondido and its NOT the best place to live if you have to commute south since the 15 is a parking lot in the morning. BUT it does have some of the lowest home prices in the county.
No need to worry about being far away from shopping, etc. I have about 10 different grocery stores within a 5 minute drive from my apt. Malls are all over the place. Fashion Valley is the more upscale mall, although I was just at UTC and they are trying to bring in some of the same retailers that are at Fashion Valley.
This is perfect! Thanks for so much great advice ladies!!
Sally: First, your baby is adorable!! Second, we live close to Whitemarsh now in Maryland if you know where that is, but I go to school in Columbia! We also have a black lab - about 2-5 years old and he is very excited to more to San Diego haha! Although, he is probably the only one that will miss the cold weather from the east coast! I think we will start by renting a townhome (hopefully) to make sure we like the area we are in and then go from there. We made that mistake where we are now, and just scooped up our house because it was new and a good price, then found out we werent in the best area.
I'm so excited!! I really hope it works out and I think my work day is going to be a big waste today so I can check out some of the specific locations you guys have talked about!! Thanks again!
