Thinking of relocating

I'm from the Northeast but DH and I may move to Cali. or Oregon within the next couple of years.  He recently applied to a job near Portland and I have been casually looking at houses and apartments in that area.  Are there any suburbs/sections of the city to stay away from due to crime, poor school districts, etc.?  I've also been looking at the following towns:

Newberg, Dundee, Sherwood...basically the towns along 99W south of Portland.

 Thanks.

Re: Thinking of relocating

  • while i love dundee and have a lot of family there. its really an old people town. its a middle of nowhere do nuthin town. its basically where people go to retire!

  • There really aren't any horrible areas of town. There are some sketchy streets here and there, but usually if you go one street farther it is nice again. You can check out the movingtooregon bio for more information.

A lot of people like the towns along 99W, and some of them, including Newberg, have small town charm, but I'd have a hard time living there because I'd feel isolated and the services/events you have easy access to are limited.

  • Sherwood is the best- my husband and I live in Sherwood right now. It has great schools, free movies and concerts in the park in the summer, it is close to lots of things (Portland, Washington Square, Wine country, Bridgeport shopping).

  • All of the towns you list are pretty small -- no problem if that's what you're looking for but if you're looking for a typical "suburb", you might look more towards Beaverton and the like.
  • I agree with the pp. All of the areas southwest of Portland are good as far as schools and crime. I would recommend looking at Tigard and Tualatin for their closer proximity to I-5. This makes getting around Portland much faster since 99W runs through towns at low speeds and is not a highway/freeway really. Commuting from Newberg/Sherwood into Portland can take 45 minutes because of traffic on 99W. Also there is more going on in Tigard/Beaverton since they are larger and more diverse.
