hello hello! Moving to san antonio!

I need recommendations for nice neighborhoods near lackland.

Dh and I met in Katy(west of houston) and lived there until he joined the Air Force. We left texas in 2006.

We're in alaska now and have been dying to get back home!

We are looking to buy our first home once there since we'll be there a while.

I want a nice, family oriented neighborhood close to the base. Can someone recommend something nice and also tell me how traffic is in san antonio? I can't imagine it's worse than Houston, but you never know!

Thanks girls! look forward to getting to know you all!

Re: hello hello! Moving to san antonio!

  • What price range are you looking at? ?The areas?immediately?surrounding the base are not that great, but if you look in the areas to the west (highway 151 between Loop 410 and Loop 1604 and Loop 1604/Potranco areas), there are some decent, mid-priced neighborhoods (some upper end on the west side of 151). ?This would be about a 20-30 minute drive to the base during peak traffic.

I would have to say that some of the traffic CAN be as bad as Houston, but San Antonio is lucky in that there are multiple ways to get to any location, so you can change routes depending on time of day, etc.

The Realtors here are VERY familiar with working with military folks, so you should be able to tell them your family is being stationed at Lackland and give them your price range and they will be able to point you in the right direction.?

  • Hi! We live off of Potranco Rd. in a cute neighborhood. It takes my hubby about 15-20 minutes to get to the base in the morning. He works at Wilford Hall. I'm not sure what your budget is for a home, so it's hard to lead you in the right direction as far as neighborhoods. Ours has a whole range of priced houses and a lot of military. I don't know if they have private messaging here, so let me know if you need anything and I'll give you my e-mail. Good luck!
  •  there is a whole new section being built right now, and there are several that are popping up for sale, as well as other neighborhoods that are very nice as well.. this is in 1604 potranco down to 1604 and culebra areas. this whole area ranges from 90's to uppers 200's so you can find anything around here. Yeah, that area that Mojo is describing has a lot of options and is growing.

  • SARAH! YAY!

San Antonio will be happy to have you :) I followed your PE story on all the trimesters and then onto 0-6.

I know your DH is in the AF, so it does narrow this down a little.

    Lackland

There are plenty of people in my neighborhood who are stationed at Lackland. It is close enough to the base for commute purposes but in a great school district.  I live in Helotes (technically) near Kyle Seale and 1604.

I would also recommend looking at the 151 and 1604 (near Sea World area). Even better commute, but a dip in the quality of the schools.

     Randolph

Schertz is a great area if your DH is stationed at Randolph. Super short commute and good schools. Lots of military in this area.

     Brooks City Base or Kelly

DH will have to accept quite a commute. Brooks is on a crappier side of base. Nothing is really good in that area. I would still recommend the locations I recommended for Lackland if you are stationed at either of these two.

We will have to schedule a playdate :)

  • You will LOVE San Antonio...the people and the culture is unlike anywhere else.  My recommendation is the Schertz area.  You are close to highway 90 which will take you straight to Lackland with less traffice than going through I-35 or I-10.  The school district is recognized and it is generally a military community.  Randolph AFB is a mere 3 miles away.  I wish you all the luck in your new adventure!

  • Sorry I missed you on 6-12, I left the office right before you responded. I figured tacking on this post you should see it.

Right outside Lackland is pretty crappy. I recommend going a little further north. I actually grew up on Lackland AFB as my dad is a retired Col. I lived on base and went to the high school on the base. Lackland has a great BX and commissary and a FABULOUS kiddy park which my dad was in charge of designing. They literally contracted the best play ground experts in the country for this park.

The north/north east side of town has the great shopping. We have a fabulous outdoor mall (La Cantera) which is perfect for getting out of the house and outside with your little man.

I would recommend finding a house that is outside loop 1604 between 151 and I10. This is a 10 mile stretch of 1604 where a lot of great neighborhoods are which would have a decent commute for your husband.

There are also some cute neighborhoods just inside 1604 on 151 near Sea World.
