So, I just had a coworker come up to me and say "you know, you are the only one in Finance and Accounting that leaves at 5:30pm? We all leave late everyday." My response was that we work in different dept, and that if I don't have to stay until 7-8pm (no urgent projects) I won't be staying late for fun. Granted, I'm the first to stay until midnight if I have to, but in very rare occassion... I keep up w/ my work to avoid such occurances.
So, if she notices, then I'm sure others talk too. Yes, we all work in Fin & Acc, but I am my own little department (Audit). I don't deal with the financial numbers, which is what takes long to reconcile and square away.
I hate that employers judge people by the amount of work they put in. Is it really "cool" to work late? Seriously? I have a life and a husband to attend to (no, he's not machista, but I actually enjoy spending time with him). My marriage comes before ANY job (well, I suppose motherhood would be different, but I digress). And now, all the top dogs are having a meeting in the conference room, and I feel bad leaving at the closing office hrs b/c I'm scared I will be judged. Fair? I dont' think so!
Does this happen to anyone?
Re: Speaking of jobs (vent - long)
Jackie, I found myself thinking this exact same thing just a few weeks ago. I almost had the nerve to tell my boss my exact feelings on the subject. When I was passed over for a promotion (by the boss' daughter, no less) my boss actually said to me, "It seems as though she just wants the position more." I literally almost fell out of my chair.
I wanted to say, So because she stays until 7-8 every night and works from home on the weekends that proves she wants the job more than I do? In reality, if she had someone to go home to (a husband, child, pet) she would be leaving at 5:30 just like I do to get home to my dogs (and yes, my FI, too) ;-)
Not to mention that I work diligently throughout the day, and don't waste time gossiping and getting involved in office politics.
So all that to say, yes I completely agree with you. I don't think its "cool" to work late, and family comes first, too. Thanks for letting me mini-rant on your post! Have a great evening.

Don't have much to say about this, but I just wanted to say I'm an auditor too! Do you do internal audit?
Well actually, now that I think about it, for the rare occassion that I am at our firm office, if you leave before 5:30pm people will talk. Forget the fact that we've been working 65+ hours a week for the last few months, but if you leave at 5:30pm people get their panties in a bunch.
This doesn't happen to me, but I have to say that if people have time to keep track of what time others come and go then that might be the reason why they have to stay late??
Just say to her next time, "well I don't choose to watch my co-workers come and go and I get my work done so that I DONT have to stay late" see what she says to that? Make sure to stick up for yourself b/c if you don't she just going to keep bothering you with stupid crap like what time you leave. Which is none of her business anyways unless she is your boss? Then just tell her that you work hard during the day and get your work done so that you DONT have to work late. Then smile and say have a nice day!
Omg people are so rude! Believe it or not, that HAS happened to me. Not in the fact that I leave earlier than other but in the fact that I may have a better schedule than others who have been here longer.
The way I see it, those people are in those positions for a reason. Like pp, they probalby slacked off or didn't use their time wisely. My motto has always been
"Precupate de ti misma" Worry about yourself.
I know it sounds harsh but this is the way I have been operating. I mind my own business and believe it or not it works. Im the only one who is never involved in drama because of this. Keep up the good work.
Thanks ladies for the support. I actually forgot to write what I actually told her... i was so pissed at the time of the post. LOL
My response, "if you were to work more efficiently throughout the day like I do, then you won't have to stay late."
JLo - I totally agree w/ that motto... after working for a few employers, I have come to realize that push come to shove, they only worry about themselves, so you are the only that can worry about yourself.
MrsExib... - yes, I'm in internal audit. I did public acc for a yr, but the moment we got engaged, I started the job hunt... and have been in IA since 04.

She started going on about how her boss gives her work at 5:15pm and expects it to be done before she leaves.
My response: "well, that is still your fault for not training him. If he knew that you left everyday before 6pm, then he'll be giving you projects prior to 4pm. My boss never gives me anything after 4pm... and if he does, it is severely urgent, and I have no prob staying then."
I am seriously SUPER upset at this. And she's a freakin' staff acct... I'm a Manager. Hello!

I cannot stand when coworkers are like that. I personally feel that if you work and complete your duties w/the given time frame then you should leave when its time to. Why do you have to stay any later?
Cynthia, you are preaching to the choir! Funny enough, every job I've held has been the same way. Perhaps it's the industry I'm in. I know I chose the wrong career, but now my household relies on my income, and can't go back. =(
I've come to the conclusion that the girl is just bitter and lonely (she's 36 w/ no bf).

This is me. I make the worst faces at stupid people and then they look at me like I'm the dumb one. Or they call me a biitch. Its funny I think.
