Poll for come heres...

If you are not from SC- what made you move to SC?

If you are from SC but moved to another part of the state, why did you move?

If you have always lived in the same place, why?

If you left SC but still hang out on the SC board because you miss it- why did you leave?

I am just curious and trying to get the board to liven up!

Re: Poll for come heres...

  • I left SC  but still hang out on this board because I miss it!

Left Charleston for school in Athens, GA and married someone I met in Athens who dragged me over to Charlotte, NC.

  • Hey thanks for trying to liven things up!

I'm originally from West Virginia but lived in the DC area before my husband and I decided to move to Greenville.  DC was too big/expensive/liberal for our tastes, and we'd decided at the end of our lease we were going to move but we weren't sure where...  I had applied for a job in Charlotte but the hiring agency was in Greenville and we came down here for my interview and we just fell in love with the city and decided this is where we would move!  My cousin and his wife live in Simpsonville, which is also nice to have some family nearby.

Moving here has been challenging for us, the low cost of living means we've been able to save a lost of money and are hoping to buy a house soon, but it's also been hard on my husband as he's not found permanent employment yet,  He's been temping incredibly regularly (40 hours a week, 9-5) for the same company since we moved here, so financially it's not a problem, but it's just very stressful for him, especially since the company is actually closing and he's there helping them close up the office.

SOOOO if anyone knows of any career opportunities in the area, I'm your gal :)

  • I'm from Columbia, but moved to Charleston for my masters degree, then found a boy at a bar, got married, a teaching job, and I don't plan to leave! I love it!

  • I've been here since I was three... my family is originally from Ohio. We moved here because my father was in the military.

    ?

I've lived in the same small town forever and I didn't move because I ended up dating DH while he was building a house here, so I just stayed in my "home town" obviously. ?I originally wanted to live closer to Isle of Palms/Mt. Pleasant area.?

  • DH and I moved here with our 1 pup last July (we've adopted another mutt pup since then) from Charlotte.  We'd both lived in that area for the last 10+ years and just gotten tired of it, so when he got a job offer here in Greenville we came down, checked it out, and decided ot go for it.

One thing we love about this area is, while it's a busy place, there are plenty of places to "get away" and let life slow down. that's such a nice difference from before. This area is much nicer, friendlier and we aren't scared to discuss/contemplate raising a family here.

Plus, I'm originally from Charleston/Kiawah, so being back in SC is like coming full circle. DH & I love where we're at, and will hopefully be here for a while.

  • We moved here on a whim.  DH received a job offer immediately upon graduating college and the closest open position was in Charleston.  We were just dating at the time and neither of us wanted to break up, so we moved in together.

Charleston has grown on me over the 6 years we've been here, but we're itching to move.  We've never felt truly settled here and still feel like outsiders.  Neither of us consider ourselves Southerners (though we are both from Florida) and have a decidedly more progressive outlook on life than most of our neighbors.  It's hard to live in a place that is so stuck in its ways and refuses to change - re-electing the same people for 30+ years isn't going to cure what ails this state.  But I digress...

We really want to move to NC for the education, weather, and career opportunities.

  • Mrs God-

I miss my old hometown of Charleston and how it was when I was a child with a smaller population, less congestion, seeing people I knew everywhere (and I am only 27), etc. but even I realize that we need to be more progressive and that re-electing the same people for 30 years is exactly what got Charleston and SC into the mess it is in.  It is a frustrating place to live at times!

  • I have always lived here except for a short period of time in college.  I've always wanted to move out of SC but have not done so because of my daughter (her dad lives here).
  • I have actually lived here for about 15 years. I was born in Florida and then moved to NC when I was in Elementary school. From there we moved to Spartanburg because of careers my parents took. I lived in Sparkle City for 11 years and them moved to Columbia for college, met a boy, got married and have made Columbia our residence.

I love the bigger town feel, but it's still quite southern and not so fast paced. We live close to the mtns. & the beach....I love living here.

  • I just moved here with my husband to be. We have been here offically 3 months. It has been a huge transition but I am happy we made it. I am from Northeast PA, lived there all my life and my fiance is from north NJ. We met in college and soon after he graduated we decided to take advantage of being young and in love so we moved here. We picked a town right outside Charleston becuase it is still close to the city like he is used to and still small like I am used to. As far as why, I mean really you cant beat the weather and the atmosphere down here. The only hard part is I left all my family and friends and I am in need of some girlfriends to spend time with. Do any of you girls meet up at all? I know my sister's local chapter in Buffalo meets and has lunch and stuff once a month. I would really love that; if anyone has any ideas please let me know.

  • Moved to SC to attend Carolina, stayed there for law school too.

Moved from Columbia to Charleston because FI got a job there.

  • I grew up in IN, but moved to SC to go to school at Clemson.  I have an aunt/uncle and cousins who live in Fort Mill, and that is how I ended up checking out Clemson.  Once I graduated, I got a job in Charlotte, and I now live in Fort Mill.

  • Well, my husband and I are both cajun natives - we were born and raised in Louisiana (go LSU)!! When I graduated from college in '05, I decided to move from New Orleans to Biloxi area for a while and since we had been seperated due to my college adventure for 5yrs, we decided to move together even though we were just dating. We moved to the Biloxi area and 2 weeks later - had our beautiful beach townhouse ripped away by Hurricane Katrina. I had always wanted to try Charleston, SC for a years so my now wonderful Husband suggested we just go since we had nothing to move other than a few clothes, a few paintings, and a cat - and here we are - Charleston, SC! We are looking to move though very soon, out of state, for his job and my graduate school.
