DH and I may be moving to AK

Hi all,

My name is Chasity and I live in VA, a few hours from DC.  But DH and I are considering moving to AK for job opportunities and to be near my brother.  We are considering the Fairbanks area, but it will depend on where DH gets a job.  We are flying out in July to try and set some things up with the goal of moving in September, at the latest.  Do you have any advice, tips about jobs, housing, life in general there?!  My brother is really helping a lot with that but he's not married and obviously doesn't see things from a woman's perspective, lol.  Although we have friends here and some family, we don't spend a lot of time with them and frequently go months without seeing them, although they only live 20 minutes to 4 hours away, so starting over and isolation won't really be a concern.

Thanks in advance for any help you give!!

  • Enjoy it! Alaska is a BEAUTIFUL place! Being away from family is very hard though. You take for granted driving a few short hours to see family. Now I have to take a 12 hr plane ride! You'll love it here, it helps to realy enjoy the outdoors though! And the winters aren't that bad, the summers by far make up for it!
  • Thanks.  Well, even though its so far away, we haven't had a weekend off in over 6 years to even drive 4 hours to visit family.  I haven't seen my grandmother years.  I talk to my mother almost daily, but I don't see her for weeks.  My FIL lives across town and we only see him on holidays.  Our friend there is like a brother to us and he has a wonderful community there and I don't think we'll feel very isolated.  I've also traveled some and been away from family for weeks in a foreign country, and I got tot say, as long as I have DH, I'm set.

  • HI,

DH and I moved up to Alaska last July.  We live in Anchorage.  Anchorage weater/temps are more moderate.  Fairbanks can get very very cold in the winter and warmer in the summer.  I have not bee not been to Fairbanks but I love Anchorage.  If you like the outdoors and hiking Alaska is great.  It is not really all that isolated, Alaska has all the big box stores now.  The only thing that is a negative for me is that airfare to fly anywhere is very expensive.
